I have a Fritzbox router for Zen Internet. I have set the Fritzbox router to use the DNS service provided by NextDNS.
Does the Sky Q equipment default to my router's DNS service? I noticed that under the Skq Q network settings, the DNS is shown as 192.168.178.1 which is the same base access address as the Frizbox router.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreYes. DHCP will allocate a DNS server address to any clients, including Q devices, based on how the DHCP server, usually your router, has been configured.
so the fritzbox is telling the devices "use me as your DNS" and actually it's just forwarding any DNS lookups on to the external NextDNS service that it knows about.
It's possible to cut out the middleman and have it tell all the devices to use the NextDNS service directly but it doesn't make much difference. DNS lookups are not very performance hungry.

What a kind and helpful answer this is, Chodley. I often get abrasive answers when I ask fundamental questions.
This tells me exactly what I wanted to know. NextDNS should remove Youtube adverts. I will now explore how the Samsung Smart TV deals with DNS.
