Sky Q Verses Sky+HD pros and cons?

At present I have a Sky+HD box, with my own connection to Sky Boroadband and have no problems being used! My mother lives in an annex and has her own Sky+ Box and her own connection to her own Broadband (BT) and phone. She gets Sky through my subscription and multiscreen addition.  I was considering moving to Sky Q with a mini box for my mother, but am now worried that this will not work because I think her signal would have to come through my broadband router??  As her room is quite a way across the house, and most of her viewing is from "normal" TV, such as ITV, BBC, etc my question is would I be better just staying as we are? I am finding the technology too confusing to comprehend. Given that my mother is 93 and I am 71, I dont want to complicate things!  Does anybody have any suggestions please?

The mini box can be connected using an Ethernet cable if that's an option? You would need to connect the main Sky Q box to your Broadband router/switch by wired Ethernet and then connect the mini to that router as well.

It may well be that your broadband router isn't in a location that allows you to wire up both boxes so powerline adapters could be an alternative or even paying someone to install cable and sockets - a lot TV aerial installers are doing this now. I've got a couple of cables installed outside my house to allow my pc and Sky Q to be connected directly by cable. However all of this involves additional expense which may or not be worth it to you.

@pitstop16 Personally I think with your set up you are best staying as you are

Q is different from HD where all recordings are saved on the hard drive in the main Q box (mini  boses don't have hard drives) and as such all the recording you make and your mother make will be mixed in together (no profiles i'm afraid) so this may cause some confusion

I may be a Sky Superuser but I am still just a Sky customer

@pitstop16

I concur with @Laing1

you may also wish to read some notes I have put together for people considering Switching (which include the above re Recordings)

SKY HD to SKY Q

Edit : Also as you have your separate internet connections this would also be difficult to have a mini at your mother's annexe -

The minis get their signal from the Main box via ethernet  or wifi & would probably need a dedicated ethernet (or very pssibly powerline adapter link) between your Network & the  SKY mini in your Mother's annexe

You should get her an HD box though because BBC are probably spamming her with red banners telling her the SD version is going away?
