Sky Q HDR Flicker/Dark

Recently just got a HDR box, when I go on UHD channels the screen flickers once and then goes darker. My TV says it is in HDR which is all fine but it's dark. This doesn't happen on Netflix apps or anything only Sky channels.

Movies are also not showing "HDR" also where it should say it next to "UHD". I have a Sony TV "KE75XH8096BU" and use a HDR HDMI cable. All the settings are fine so can't find any problems.

hi @R22222

SKY use a different tyoe of HDR to Netflix.

They use a version called HLG which is darker than other versions & ideally needs a TV with a peak brightness of 600 nits - from a quick search I did it seems your TV has a peak brightness of 550 nits which is slightly below this.

This may explain why your screen goes noticibly darker - is it too dark ?

Regarding films - not all films (or Sport) in UHD are in HDR  - those that are should default to HDR but just in case check 'All formats"

If you have a specific film or a few films you think should be available in HDR let us know & we can check

Re: Sky Q HDR Flicker/Dark

Thank you for the response, yeah it's noticeably darker, it goes from blight blue to dark blue on the Home Screen when HDR is activated. On my TV I use auto on HDR to pick up HDR 10 or the HDR Sky use.

I went on sky cinema and ultra hd and no movie at all came up as HDR, no icon saying HDR at all.

I have just gone into the SKY Cinema/ Ultra HD  TAB & I admit most I looked at don;t show HDR

However for me on the Latest movies in UHD rail the following are showing with an HDR icon:

Don't Worry Darling

(then had to scroll right a lot further to get)

Where the Crawdads Sing

Elvis

Billet Train

Father Stu

Operation Mincemeat

Downtown Abbey

THis is Christmas

THe Batman

Re: Sky Q HDR Flicker/Dark

Sorted out all the colouring and looks good now, had to use gamma adjustment and max out the colour.

do you know if a hdr logo will show on sky when on main even or f1? At the top right will it say "Sky Sports UHD HDR" or will it just says Sky Sports UHD as usual?

Glad you have managed to get an aceptable picture

The Digital On-Screen  Graphics (DOG) just say UHD - The SKY Sports Main event channel did used to be called a made up name of Ultra HDR which was used in the DOG but has now (imo) sensibly been renamed

You will need to rely on the  TV info to confirm HDr but both the F! UHD and Sports Main Event IHD are always HDR (a lot of content being native HDR with other upscaled etc - it is never clear which is native or upscaled)

Re: Sky Q HDR Flicker/Dark

Yeah I thought I seen other people have Ultra HDR, so it is still HDR but just keeps the same graphic of Sky Sports UHD and the channel name is still SkySportsMeUHD?

Yes SkySpME UHD is HDR - it is SDR if the box doesn't support HDR or resolution is set to 8 bit
