Recording in Different Formats

Why do Sky make it difficult to record a new TV show because of different formats forbidding non-HD customers ?
It would save us time if we were able to find a show to record, hit record and then just be asked: "which format do you have?" And then we just click Basic or HD.

Instead if we are not HD customers , we get a time wasting-message something like  "Can't record . Upgrade to SKY HD"

And then we have to waste time navigating back to Show Formats and click to Basic .

And THEN we can finally record.

Here's the thing. Not all of us can afford or even want to go HD.

So stop forcing us to GO HD when all we want to do is record a show .

That would show us Non-HDers a bit more respect.

Hi @Musicleonardo

You can set your Preference to SD in Settings

Sky Signature includes BoxSets and Entertainment channels only in SD as standard.
Only free to air channels such as BBC, ITV etc are in HD. The Q HD pack is required for all other Sky Signature HD content, including Catch Up in HD, On Demand in HD and BoxSets in HD
If you do not have the Optional HD pack you need to change the Download to SD in All Formats (as HD is the default setting).
So that you do not need to do this every time it’s best to change your Download preference to SD in Home - Settings - Setup - Preferences.
This needs to done on the main Q box.
Then if you want to download any HD content from free to air channels (BBCHD ,ITVHD etc) you can select HD in the All formats tab of the content . This will change the format for that particular download only but still leave your format to SD in preferences.

Re: Recording in Different Formats

Thanks Oldfella, I just fixed it in Settings.

I think the original Sky engineer had set it to that, then I  had to do a software update.

Could the settings  have changed with that update?
And if so, can we do something to protect settings for future sonfware updates?

No it's unlikely a Software update would change your preference @Musicleonardo .

Never ever changed mine

Re: Recording in Different Formats

Thanks .

on a more general note, is there a fix in Settings to safeguard against Settings changes Software Updates sometimes cause?

Re: Recording in Different Formats

I have sky package with alibi but cannot download programmes from catch up without being told to upgrade.   My settings in preferences are set ti Standard and I click on standard at the download screen and still get the message to upgrade.    What is the point of setting preferences to standard to watch a programme available in standard definition when it dow not work.   So frustrating.
