Re: Recommended HDMI Cables

I'm u able to get HDR through the sky Q box on my Samsung s90c OLED.  Only thing I can think is the HDMI I have had since sky fitted it about 5 years ago, aren't up to the task? Not sure if it's 2.0 or what, has one end black and other end Pink. Trying to find one to purchase to is guarenteed compatible with HDR...

'HDR' is just a small amount of additional digital data: any 'high speed' cable capable of passing UHD bandwidth should be entirely compatible.  There's no such thing as an HDR HDMI cable.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/do-you-need-new-hdmi-cables-for-hdr/

Amazon Basics 2.0 HDMI are fine up to three metres for £5, for example: pay a little extra for the 2.1 specification if you really want to, but about £10 at most is all that's actually needed.

Also note that any passive HDMI cable over three metres starts getting dubious for UHD no matter how expensive it is.

Make sure first of all that your Q box is actually capable of outputting HDR. Not all of them are.

Ah, this was posted to the Stream forum, so I've moved it now.

@Pearsy4 The original 2TB (2016) and 1TB (2016-2019) main Q boxes don't output HDR, and nor does any Q Mini box

Re: Recommended HDMI Cables

When I called sky earlier today, they said my box should be fine... they've booked me an engineer! I've ordered a new 2.1 HDMI Cable in the mean time.

That's not HDR capable. You'll need to upgrade your box if you want HDR.

Some advisers don't seem to know the difference between UHD & (UHD) HDR

Unless you were sent that as a replacement for a previous HDR one then, yes, you are correct there will be a charge to upgrade

Re: Recommended HDMI Cables

Now on the phone to a 3rd operator of the day and she's adamant that it is compatible! Where would I find HDR contend if it was on there? Can you just search for HDR or is there a HDR section?

Re: Recommended HDMI Cables

Yep. 3rd operator of the day is adamant that it is compatible,  but she also says on the system it says my box is a 1TB box, when I'm pretty certain it's a 2TB box 🤷

Well, she's wrong.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Regardless of what their system says, the hardware version on your box is definitive.

Yes, sadly there are still many Sky customer service employees who have no idea about the capabilities of the hardware. It doesn't help that there are so many variants of Q box and the specific type a customer receives isn't always logged correctly.

When Q boxes develop faults and need to be replaced, they are supposed to be swapped like for like but this doesn't always happen. It's been reported several times on here that some customers have ended up with newer HDR capable boxes without paying any upgrade fee largely because the box types aren't logged correctly.
