Hello
I have previously bought a Sky soundbox and had to return it as found it impossible to get sound through my Samsung TV while playing DVDs (although sound from the Sky TV channels was absolutely fine - my Samsung TV is not a smart TV).
My DVD player is part of a home sound surround system so includes 4 small speakers and 2 additional (sub woofer?) speakers.
I tried disconnecting all the DVD speakers from the DVD player and just playing DVDs through the DVD player while connected to the TV and Sky soundbox but still couldn't get any sound from DVDs via the Sky soundbox (or from the TV itself at this point from the DVDs).
I'm now wondering whether the issue is I need to purchase/connect a stand alone DVD player that isn't part of a surround sound system in order to get sound via the Sky soundbox while playing DVDs.
I'd now have Sky Q and would like to now purchase a (used) Sky soundbox and try connecting it again but can anyone help please as to how I might resolve DVD sound problem?
Many thanks for any advice (gratefully) received.

hi @Shaun17
I feel I must ask why you are trying to get sound from the Sound Bar or TV rather than using the surround sound with separate speakers from your DVD/Surround Sound system..
Your separate speaker System is likely to give better sound than the SKY Soundbar or indeed many Sound bars
That said, if you really want to do this then we probably need to access your DVD/Sound system manual so please can you let us know the Make and specific model number of it so we can search fror a mnual online.
I must advise I have no personal knowledge of the SKY Sound bar and online information for it is limited - although I know a few others here may be able to give specific advice.
I know it does not support the ARC connections to be able to use that for Sound from the TV itself but as your TV is not a Smart TV I doubt that is an issue for you.

Hi Nigea99
Many thanks for your helpful response.
It's a good question as to why the switch to Sky soundbox, I guess I'm just wanting something neater with fewer cables and taking up less space (although your comments are duly noted thank you).
The DVD player is a Samsung Digital Home Cinema System and on the front page of the
User Manual it states HT-Z320 which I assume is the model number.
I perhaps should add that both the TV and DVD system are both about 12 years old but still in perfect working order.
Hope this helps and thanks once again.

hi @Shaun17
I have just come accross this mention in your manual
HDMI connector - Supports video and digital audio data.
- HDMI outputs only a pure digital signal to the TV
Which would probably explain why your TV won't give you sound as DVDs mainly use Dolby Digital and your TV would need to be able to decode it.
I am not sure why the Sound box would not work but I still have more of the manual to read to see if I can spot anything else

Wow thanks for the prompt response!
I'm not sure I understand the technicalities to be honest but just to clarify, the soundbox plays absolutely fine through the TV on it's own and also with the DVD connected. However as soon as I try to play the DVD the sound for the DVD disappears and therefore no sound from the TV or the soundbox?

I have found the relevant section in your manual
To use with a Sound bar you need to take the actions on Page 58 of the manual I have found to toggle the Audio on via the HDMI & disable the speakers - tiitled setting the HDMI Audio
EDIT : BTW If you do continue to use the Z320 and get sound from a sound bar (by setting as per the manual) it seems you may loose the Surround effects as the sound is downmixed to 2 Channels . As I think the Sound box and most other Sound bars do produce surround sound to varying degrees you may be better getting a dedicated DVD player

That's incredibly helpful although I just thought of a possible complication!
My DVD remote control doesn't work anymore so I have to use the TV remote which incorporates some of the DVD functions.
This might prevent me maybe from taking the action you describe?

Yes you would need the Z320 remote to change the setting.
Thus if you do want to use a Sound bar (be it a 2nd hand Sound box or any other) you may be better getting a dedicated DVD player

Thanks for that, it's been extremely helpful. You provide a first class service and I'm grateful. Thanks again!

If your TV remote has a "switch to DVD mode" it might be able to navigate the menu on the DVD player but if it just uses some play/ffwd buttons then no.

Thanks yes I'm just looking at the DVD players for sale now. And yes actually the TV remote does have a DVD switch 😀

In that case it might be able to change the setting on the dvd system.
