Thanks everyone on this thread for your help.  

I spoke to a human eventually. We did all the reboot stuff to no avail.

 

They have transferred me to someone called Domestic & General. 

I've now been on hold for 35 minutes!

Weird. Why would it have anything to do with D&G? They should just send a new box from Sky. Did you have Sky Protect?

I got transferred back to Sky. 

All the same reboots and checks. 

After 70 minutes on the phone talking to three separate people they agreed to send another replacement box. 

Hopefully I'll have better luck with that one. 

Not impressed with Sky's customer service at all!

The replacement for the replacement arrived. 

It worked straight out of the box! 

I now regard this as having concluded satisfactorily.
