Netflix

Hello all.

I have recently been getting the red spinning circle when attempting to load up netflix on my SkyQ mini box.

During the process of attempting to sort this issue out I searched this forum and found a post from the following forum link.

https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Q/Netflix-Won-t-Load-Spinning-Circle/td-p/4327487

It said I should do the following.

Sign Out of device through Web Browse:

  1. Log into Netflix via the web browser.
  2. Highlight your profile picture (Top right corner).
  3. Click on Account.
  4. Under the Security and Privacy option, click on Manage access and devices.
  5. Select the device name: (it may be called SkyQ ......or Sky UK Set-top box).
  6. Select--> click on the "Sign out" option on the SkyQ ......or Sky UK Set-top box.
  7. Go to your SkyQ box and launch the Netflix app on your SkyQ box.

I followed this to the letter as well as the other instructions but it is these instructions here which appear to be an issue at the moment for me.

Before I could do this process I had to go and change my password as I had forgotten it. I did this through the browser on my computer. After I had changed my password and followed all of the instructions in the link I posted I removed the power cable from my SkyQ mini box for 30 secs and powered it back on and also did the same on my router to try and ensure that netflix would not load.

Once my mini box had loaded back up again I loaded netflix. At this stage I expected to be presented with the log in screen for netflix as I had changed my password. I was rather surprised to see that this did not take place and my mini box just loaded netflix without having to input my new password. I then went and started playing a tv series just to ensure that it worked.

At this stage I then exited the netflix app on my mini box and loaded up netflix in the browser on my computer. Again I went to the settings and logged out of my minibox. My main Sky Q box did not appear in the list as I had already removed it the time before.

I then loaded up the netflix app on my mini box again expecting to be presented with the log in screen and again was disappointed that this did not take place.

This is concerning to me in some ways as it leaves me wondering why it is possible to sign into netflix on my mini box with a password that should no longer be working. Why is it possible to remove a device from netflix and then have that device still sign in with an old password.

I then called Sky customer services and the rep that I spoke to was dismissive of this. I was basically told that it was not a Sky problem even though it is taking place on a Sky product. My old password does not work in the browser on my computer so to my way of thinking there is no reason why it should work on my mini box.

It therefore leaves me with concerns around the security of how netflix is working on SkyQ

The Sky box / app have their own security authentication token and don't use your password.

Sky host NetFlix's code only - to some degree it's not Sky's issue.

It's more likely that authentication post password is not done with the password.  A token (like a cookie) will be stored and used and will still validate with NetFlix.

But again, this is primarily NetFlix's code - you may wish to contact them.

It is somewhat surprising that kicking the mini box off the active devices doesn't expire the token and require the password again though, if you're using your own account and not one paid via Sky.

Re: Netflix

I find something else a little perplexing even if using a Sky account to pay for netflix.

The link and instructions I provided above is provided by Sky as a way to solve the spinning circle issue when watching netflix on a Sky box.

We as customers are basically told to deselect all devices in the netflix settings via a browser to solve an issue with watching netflix on a Sky box and doing that does not force that person to sign back in on their Sky box at all which makes it appear to be a pointless bit of advice.

Surely going into the netflix settings via a browser and choosing to remove each device like is advised by Sky should force a release of the Sky token and force another sign in as the device has been deauthorised via the netflix settings.

Yes but if using a sky id,  the box knows who you are and could do that without prompting you.

@Bifta when changing your Netflix password did you choose the correct option so your new password needed to be used.

You need to check the sign out of all devices for your new password to work not doing this means any devices logged into your account will still use the old password.

There's a bit of clue in the post you refer to, "... we’ve been working behind the scenes with Netflix...".

As I said, Sky provide the platform and NetFlix provide the app/code.  You won't get any specific details on how the authentication works behind the scenes - our answers are an (educated) 'guess'.

He said he signed the sky boxes out manually separately using "manage access and devices" which is the workaround Sam discovered that seems to fix the loading issue for a lot of people. I think this is a relatively new feature of Netflix.

It is and is possibly a result of the issues of Netflix on Sky.

Fair comment @Chodley he also said he changed the password using his PC and that the PC wouldn't accept the old password

I was pointing out that if he manually signed out of  Netflix using the browser version the old password remains.

As the old password remains even though he's only changed the password for the PC as that was the only device logged into his Netflix account.

It is possible to change the password on one device leaving the other devices still using the old password
