You will see last summer (previous posts on here) I had major problems with this issue.
After my box was swapped to a 1TB box - which I was reluctant to do - I have never had the issue since. My sky engineer who swapped the box just said in his experience the 2tb boxes were sensitive and perhaps the new EE router I had was somehow a trigger for those issues with the 2 tb box but 7 months later I can report that I never had a further problem. So I am very happy with my Sky 1TB system. I got a refund from Sky to cover the affected period too.

See this would support my madcap theory about issues with the 1Gb port. The new Virgin router probably supported that speed unlike the old one. The v3 2TB Sky box does too.
This all assumes you're using ethernet 😁 otherwise it's totally irrelevant of course.

I had a exactly this issues on moving to the EE router, hence establishing this chat thread.
Months of trying different things and having at least 10 new boxes then as per the suggestion on the thread to move to 1TB box instead of 2TB and I haven't had any problems since.
So, the good news for anyone else with the issue is that this is a proven fix!
You're welcome ☺️

This evening I am going to connect main box via WiFi and see how that goes... When Sky engineer comes on Tues I'll suggest trying the 1TB Q box and monitor that. This thread has proved very useful, many thanks 👍🏻

Main Box now connected via WiFi, had to reset all 3 mini boxes to connect to the network also. Now it's a waiting game to see what occurs!!!......

@Waynesully If the wifi doesn't work well (and it rarely does) but stops the issue, would be very interested if a cheap 100Mb switch between the router and sky Q box also works.

@Chodley so far so good..... mate I have no idea what a 100mb switch is???

In between the Q and router.
This will connect the Q box at 100Mb (max this switch can do) rather than 1Gb. My suspicion, based on pretty limited evidence, is that when the Q is using the faster connection, it causes this lockup/fan noise thing some mornings when it does its refresh cycle.

Ahh ok, I actually think I have one of those, I'll dig it out and give it a try.
just to clarify, my box doesn't just freeze in the morning refresh, In fact I've turned that off. It freezes several times a day at random times and last Friday was the worst yet, 5 times in 5 hours!!!

Mine is an Ethernet connection for the main Q and three minis. It would crash ever day at any time, even while watching TV.
I never thought to try the 100mbps switch idea while I had the 2TB Q but as I said all was resolved on moving to a 1TB Q box.

I could test mine if I dig out a long enough ethernet cable or swap a couple of switches around but having got it stable and working for the last couple of years, I'm too scared to touch it!
