No, you do not (and did not).  Any lump sum paid was a non-returnable fee, not a purchase price: all Q television hardware is on loan.

Unfortunately this has been a cause of confusion since Q launched in early 2016.

All Q hardware is owned by Sky and must be returned if you cancel your subscription - it's extremely clear in the T&C's you agreed.

If you do not return them then you will be charged non-return fees and you still won't own them.

What you paid was one-off admin charges - you did not purchase them.

@Dolan1

As stated above as they are owned by Sky and loaned to you then they must be returned.

@Dolan1

They're of no use to you anyway. They won't work without a subscription and you can't sell them (not least because they're not yours) as they wouldn't work for anyone else either.

@Dolan1  When you return the boxes, make sure you keep the proof of posting, even if the 3rd party company that deals with the returns indicates that they have received them, as there is a major delay between them collecting the items & Sky ackowledging that they have them.  Without the proof of posting you will have a harder time convincing Sky that you;ve sent them!

Wow i didn't know this!

I have just canceled Sky after 19 years continuous subscription and have had Sky  Q for 4 years, in the current climate its just too expensive!

On installation I paid £100 for each Sky Q Mini Box, we had 3 installed, the engineer took a Credit Card payment at his van for them and my understanding was that I was purchasing them.

The email on canceling states I have to return them so what was the £300 for I was paying £100 as well for the engineer to install Sky Q so that makes the installation / Admin for sky Q £400, they have propper had my pants down. I thinks it's propper scummy that they don't tell you that the equipment is never your and always on loan, yes i know T's and C's but the engineer that took the payment could have clarified that point.

I know they will not work beyond cancellation by my thought was to box them back up and put them in the loft so that if I choose to reactivate sky in the future I could reuse them rather than buying more.

Also, just as an addition to the above, my account page on the Sky website next to everything, such as Sky HD, Sky Sports HD etc, that was already part of my package it has an expiry date of the 6/02/2026

Next to the Sky Mini Box it says 3 Already Yours in green whereas everythig that is finishing is in red

Even more confused

Yup, poor wording but they are still not yours.  The contact is explicit on this.

If you don't return them then you will be charged and you will still not own them.

When returning them ensure you retain proof of posting indefinitely.

Intended to be read as 'already in your possession', I suspect, which doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as ownership.

Re: I paid 50 for sky mini qbox and now they want it when i cancel

It can be confusing esp. as Sky actually tend to want the equipment back.

I remember when I signed up to Sky Q in the early days that cost was listed as a admin/delivery cost if I remember correctly.  Although I always thought of it as "paying" for the box as the cost was different depending on the box.  In those days I think it was £100 mini box, £100 1TB main box & £200 for the 2TB main box.  If it was just delivery/admin the 2TB box should've been the same in my opinion.

However, I understood they were using words to get the cost of the box, but also allowing them to get it back.  I wanted the service, and the "box prices" were no different to the old HD ones really so I was happy to pay.  In those days you did't even get a free 1st mini box so we stumped up £300 odd quid (2TB + mini).

The confusing to most people is that Sky actually want the equipment back.  Most companies (eg. your ISP) although the equipment is loaned, most times by the time you upgrade/switch the equipment is so out of date they don't want it back and at best ask you to recycle it.  So people have got used to that kind of thing.

Sky on the other hand need the equipment I assume.  Sky Q still has a few years of life left in it and I doubt they've built a new box in years, so they're probably wholey dependant on refurbishing returned boxes to be able to sell new contracts (if they still are) and replace broken boxes of existing subscribers.

@AnytimePlus+On+VM

Sky Q is still available to new customers but not online… they have to call.

The up-front cost was typically a bargaining point though: it rapidly reduced if options were added to the baseline subscription. I seem to recall ours went from £249 to £49 by agreeing to take Sky Cinema

I doubt they've built a new box in years

Probably the 1TB UHD/HDR from late 2019.
