HLG

Hello I have a Panasonic TB-55W60AEY television with uhd but when I watch say Leicester v Newcastle game in uhd it use hlg and the picture is awful,I had to watch the game in HD and it's the same watching Gangs of London.

Is there a way of stopping hlg and just use her?

Thank you.

Try playing something on Sky with HLG and tweak the picture settings to try and get a better, brighter image quality. Try different picture modes and contrast options to see what you can achieve. It may be futile though if the TV can't simply provide enough brightness.

It's not uncommon for cheaper TVs to shout about having HDR but the reality is they can't always do it justice in terms of actual performance.

I had to adjust the picture settings on my mum's cheap LG set and managed to get a reasonable picture with HLG content eventually.

hi @geordiejohn1950

Try setting the resolution to 2160 8 bit rather than 10 bit

Just out of interest what is the problem with the HLG HDR ?

Does it go very dark or something else ?

Re: HLG

I tried putting to 8bit but the tv won't allow it so back to 10bit.

Yes tv goes dark.

Thank you.

Hmm very strange - you should be able to select 8 bit.

Most people have problem setting to 10 bit rather than 8 bit

Try looking in the HDMI Settings and change the Mode setting to Mode1 & try again (or if Mode 1 try Mode 2)

On my Pansonic OLED it is in Setup - HDMI Auto Setting but may be somewhere esle on yours.

Some TVs don't have a good enough peak brightness to work with HLG HDR - I haven't been able to find out what the peak brightness is for your TV - these days it seems quite difficult to find this out. It really needs to be at least 600nits (aka cd/m2)

Hi @geordiejohn1950   Can you explain why you cannot set it to 8 bit. It should be a simple case of manually setting it to 8 bit. Do not use the Find it for me.

HLG is HDR.  It's the commonly used HDR for broadcasters.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Hi @geordiejohn1950   Do you not see this screen? (It may be a while before it is approved)

Hi @geordiejohn1950  Make sure that you Select Confirm (OK) before the clock counts down.

Did you hit confirm before it timed out?

you need a high peak brightness for HLG, moreso than for HDR10. Suspect that TV isn't bright enough.

Movies going to HLG

Hello I had trouble watching Gangs of London uhd hdr on Sky recording as when I checked Panasonic 55W60AEY the source said uhd hlg and the screen is really dark, same with the film on Sky Dunkirk but Paddington movie uhd hdr on Netflix fine.

I spent an hour on the phone to Panasonic who said it was a Sky problem,I then phoned Sky who said it was a Panasonic problem so no success even after resetting tv to factory settings.

Any ideas please 🙏

All of Sky's UHD HDR content is in the HLG format.

Netflix largely use Dolby Vision as their preferred format as it is a better adaptive form of HDR. Are you using the Netflix app on the TV to watch Paddington? Sky Q boxes don't output Dolby Vision.

Your TV may not cope well with HLG as it needs a high peak brightness to look effective. Dolby Vision changes on a shot by shot basis so can end up looking better than HLG on lower spec TVs.

Try playing something on Sky with HLG and tweak the picture settings to try and get a better, brighter image quality. Try different picture modes and contrast options to see what you can achieve. It may be futile though if the TV can't simply provide enough brightness.

Re: Movies going to HLG

I watched Paddington on Netflix app and I was told by Sky to put brightness to 80

I have sharpness and colour on 50

My Panasonic 55w60aey tv is uhd 4k and hdr is fine.

It seems Panasonic and Sky are passing the buck.

It's either Sky or Panasonic but I am getting nowhere so my uhd hdr movies and things like Gangs of London have really dark screen?

Thank you.
