Anything labelled as UHD with HDR on Sky will have HLG.

I watched Paddington on Netflix app and I was told by Sky to put brightness to 80

My Panasonic 55w60aey tv is uhd 4k and hdr is fine.

It seems Panasonic and Sky are passing the buck.

It's either Sky or Panasonic but I am getting nowhere so my uhd hdr movies and things like Gangs of London have really dark screen?

Thank you.

Paddington In Peru on Netflix has Dolby Vision. Try playing it using the Netflix app built in to your Panasonic TV, not via the Netflix app on the Sky Q box.

Sky are talking absolute nonsense about telling you to turn the brightness to 80. All HDR content, be it HLG, HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision will automatically push the backlight to maximum on any LCD TV. You can then adjust brightness and contrast to suit whatever looks best to your eye. Most Sky employees have very little technical knowledge when it comes to things like this and they simply cannot offer picture settings advice for every single make and model of TV without being right in front of it.

@BenJoBanjo Note that although the Netflix app on SKY Q does not use Dolby Vision, it also does not use HLG (unlike SKY UHD Content) - it uses standard HDR10 (BTW this is the same for Disney+ & Amazon Prime etc)

Any SKY content in HDR uses HLG HDR though

To see how your TV copes otherwise with HLG HDR try using the BBC iplayer on your TV & select some UHD content such as Green Planet

Fully aware of all this.

BTW Netflix has also recently started offering HDR10+ on compatible TVs.

That is still an LCD TV. The LED bit is just how the backlight is produced. They still use liquid crystal panels.

I don't think turning brightness (which sets the "black" zero level) down is going to make it seem any less dark.

Note you have to make any changes while watching HLG content. The TV will store different settings for certainly SDR vs HDR and possibly for each flavour of HDR.

Re: HLG

Hello. Sorry to hear you are having quality issues using HDR format on the Sky Q box on your Panasonic TB-55W60AEY 4K UHD HDR TV.

There are multiple reasons why this may happen, but there are potential fixes. Failing that you can disable HDR.

To disable HDR on your Sky Q Box and watch all UHD broadcasts or recordings without HDR, on the Sky Q box menu system, go to ‘Settings / Setup / Audio Visual’ and change the ‘Picture Resolution’ to ‘2160p 8-bit’.

When disabling HDR, as above, you may need to set the HDMI source input to ‘Regular’. If it is set to ‘Enhanced’ you may have a picture issue with the Sky Q Box set to 8-bit.

Here are some possible resolutions you can try if you want to try to get HDR working:

Swap to another cable. You will need a high-speed 4K cable, which is certified. Preferably with excellent shielding and gold connectors.

Try a different HDMI port on the TV, and check both the TV and Sky Q box connections are firmly in place.

Adjust the picture settings manually. You can download a UHD HDR test card from the help section on the Sky box, and the HDR Setup video will show you how to calibrate the TV manually.

Re: Movies going to HLG

Brightness on 80 was a slight improvement and we managed to finish Gangs of London.

Thank you.

Hello I had trouble watching Gangs of London uhd hdr on Sky recording as when I checked Panasonic 55W60AEY the source said uhd hlg and the screen is really dark, same with the film on Sky Dunkirk but Paddington movie uhd hdr on Netflix fine.

I spent an hour on the phone to Panasonic who said it was a Sky problem,I then phoned Sky who said it was a Panasonic problem so no success even after resetting tv to factory settings.

Any ideas please 🙏

Try playing something on Sky with HLG and tweak the picture settings to try and get a better, brighter image quality. Try different picture modes and contrast options to see what you can achieve. It may be futile though if the TV can't simply provide enough brightness.

It's not uncommon for cheaper TVs to shout about having HDR but the reality is they can't always do it justice in terms of actual performance.

I had to adjust the picture settings on my mum's cheap LG set and managed to get a reasonable picture with HLG content eventually.

Re: Movies going to HLG

This is an email Sky just sent me.

Sky transitioned to using the HLG format for UHD HDR content in August last year, which may not be compatible with all mid-range televisions. We strive to provide the best viewing experience possible, and I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

While we cannot change the format used for UHD HDR content, I recommend checking with Panasonic to see if there are any firmware updates available for your TV model that might improve compatibility with HLG. Additionally, you might explore other settings or options within your TV that could enhance your viewing experience.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, please feel free to reach out. We are here to help.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Strang that as I've been watching HLG HDR on Sky for several years, even F1 transitioned to HLG in 2022 https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/12567851/formula-1-on-sky-sports-set-to-be-broadcast-in-high...

Re: HLG

I've been on to Panasonic who said my tv is compatible with HLG and advised me to get a 2.0a cable,I've just ordered a 2.1 gold plated cable to see if that works.

Sky first provided HLG content back in 2020.

It might well be compatible but that doesn't mean it will look any good. You need a minimum peak brightness of at least maybe 400-500nits for HLG to not look washed out and subdued.

the new cable will make no difference. If you got a stable picture without sparkles or breakup through the old one then it was working fine.
