Google Mesh issue with Sky Q Mini

I get my wi-fi from Community Fibre, and run it over a Google Mesh network across my home.

In the back room of my house, I have a Sky mini box, and it regularly struggles to connect the Sky Q box.

This isn't a wifi signal problem - the smart TV in that same room streams Apple TV, Netflix, IPlayer without issue. I also have a Sonos network with speakers in that room and they connect without problem.

It's only the Sky mini box that have issues. I've twice had engineers over but none have fixed it yet.

Is the problem Community Fibre? Or the Google Mesh network? Or having two or even three meshes running (Google, Sky, Sonos)?

hi @BrixtoGeoff

When you wifi is not SKy then the mini does not connect to your wifi but instead to a wifi signal generated by the main box

I guess there is possibly intereference between the networks.

BTW DECT cordless phones are also known to cause problems if too close

Re: Google Mesh issue with Sky Q Mini

I don't have a cordless phone so it sounds like not having Sky Broadband could be the issue.

Is there any other fix or workaround other than getting Sky Broadband?

hi @BrixtoGeoff

you may be able to get a booster from SKY.

You may also find just moving the box slightly may possibly help.

I don;t suppose you could connect th emini to the main box via ethernet ?

Or connect the mini to the google mesh node with ethernet?

Re: Google Mesh issue with Sky Q Mini

Thanks @Chodley & @nigea99 - I've moved the mini box within the room it is in to be closer to the main box already; I can't ethernet attach the mini-box to the main box without a long unsightly ethernet cable running through the house; and I've also tried ethernet connecting the mini-box to the local google mesh node in the same room (recommended by a sky engineer) and that didn't work either so looks like a Sky Booster is my next best bet!

Interesting because that's what I do with my Q box to get to the internet and it works great (BT wholehome not google)

did you re-setup the Mini to use ethernet and disable its wifi?

@Chodley

Don't you need both the Main & mini to be connected to the Mesh via ethernet - your previous post implied just the mini  connected that way (unless I read it wrong)

Re: Google Mesh issue with Sky Q Mini

The main is connected via ethernet to the main mesh hub too, I didn't make that clear previously. What I didn't check when the mini box was connected to its mesh unit whether the wifi was turned off on the mini too. That's one to check for me - thanks both!

I don't think so. Flat network, should work across physical layers.
