Getting Sky Q - does it need an ethernet connection to the internet or can it work on wifi?

I had Sky Stream, and have decided to move to Sky Q; Sky Stream was unreliable and glitchy and not really fit for purpose for me - the menu is annoying too.   My router is in a different part of the house to where the TV is and am wondering if this will be an issue - do you know if the Sky Q box needs to be connected to the internet via an ethernet cable or can it work on wifi?

Many thanks!

hi @Newbie998

Yes SKY Q can connect via wifi - probably the majority of customers use wifi

It does, of course, need to have a cable from the dish

I would search this forum for "wifi" or "connection" or "router" to get a sense of its reliability over wifi.

However, bear in mind that the forums are always biased towards any customers that have problems and do not reflect the majority that don't

And all the other forums they go to.

My firmly held belief, having worked for big IT vendors for a couple of decades, is that the wifi networking in the Q box is a proprietary dog's breakfast, hacked to solve the wifi performance challenges of 2010, which just about behaves itself in ideal conditions with a Sky (pre-Max) router.

I'd love to see real data on the % of customers who have problems with wifi.

powerlines or ethernet on the other hand, I think work well enough. You can get it stable.
