High up-front fees existed so that they could be discounted where the new user signed up for additional content such as Cinema and Sports.  £249 for a Sky Q Silver back in 2016 almost always became something more like £49.

I believe the standard 'fee' became £99 in late 2019 when the choice between 1TB and 2TB main boxes was replaced with the single 1TB UHD/HDR model.

Re: Essentials package

Yeah, I reckon it was probably April ish 2016 I took it out, was very happy to pay it at the time but don't think I was aware it was an admin fee rather than a  box fee.

What's crazy is just how little 4k content has really come about in that length of time. Sure some movies, and a bit of sport, but the lack of it in general is surprising, and that SD still exists rather than HD being the standard now.

You're not alone in that but the contract is crystal clear on box ownership.

Satellite broadcast of UHD is limited due to the (expensive) bandwidth required to carry it.  Most streamers do carry UHD but also charge a premium fee for it...

Re: Essentials package

Not everyone is prepared to approach the strange dude standing in the dark alleyway selling goods..I know many people do that but each to their own principles I guess.

I have been with Sky for 17+ years and don't feel penalised. Always managed to get great deals. This is actually one of the higer rates I have paid...in the past have paid low as £11 for Sky Q signature. No its not the "Essential pack"

Re: Essentials package

I'm 23 years with sky ...I'm paying 115 quid a month for normal broadband...no sports channels what so ever and no extra apps like Disney+   So my principals are on power with sky's.

This apparently is a discounted offer  !!

Re: Essentials package

24 months of an apparent offer that just keeps rising is a joke .

Put simply, creating content in UHD requires bigger design , production and editing budgets which the TV market cannot afford.

There's a vast back catalogue of material in SD with no current way to extract more resolution from the video storage on which it was captured or transferred: conceivably AI assisted techniques may make it possible to artificially 'recover' absent data, but that would inevitably reveal the cheapness of the original production.

Do we really want pin-sharp HDR 'Dad's Army' with every dodgy prop and bodged set garishly exposed?

Re: Essentials package

@mdc4566

You must be on rolling contract without any discounts applied and have other toys added like multiroom, Netflix premium and HD packs.

If not then you must be Sky most favourite customer.

Broadband is about £45 rolling contract, you don't need to be with Sky broadband to enjoy Sky TV. You can jump to any Openreach ISP and enjoy new customer rates and keep moving every 24m.

I have Sky TV but 5+ years been using Virgin Media internet..moving to Sky 500 in a week for £27 plus a £120 voucher. After 24m if Sky don't offer a good deal broadband..then I will shop around with another ISP for new customer rate.

Re: Essentials package

Well, this'll do just nicely! I tried to stop my cancellation and get Essentials, which they said would be £15 on a rolling 31 days. They couldn't stop it as it was only 1 day to ending so the system had taken oven. I called back today after it had cancelled out to get it sorted, and he says well I can do essentials for £7! Still 31 days rolling, and the discount lasts for 24 months! This'll do just nicely until we decide I'd we can do without it entirely!

Re: Essentials package

Just downgraded my Sky Q to Essentials package. Does it not include Netflix with ads (website says yes, Sky said No)??

@StewRoney  no it doesn't, that only applies to the version on sky glass/Stream

sky have rather unfortunately chosen similar names for completely different offerings

hi @StewRoney

I am guessing that image is from a 3rd party site that might be using AI or otherwise just mis-informed

As per @SKY1992bf ,  unfortunately with SKY Q essentials - you only get the 'Free to Air' channels & do not get  SKY Atlantic which is not Free To Air

SKY Q essentials is not the same as the recent  similarly named  package only available on Glass/Stream called Essential TV

which does include SKY Atlantic

It is very unfortunate that SKY have reused the essential name for a package that is dfifferent & this manages to confuse virtually everybody and especially AI generated content
