Does Sky Q Mini Box require broadband?

Hi

I set up Sky Q for my (elderly) mother.  She doesn't have broadband, but it is working normally for watching live and recording (which is fine as she doesn't stream).

We then got a Mini Box for a second TV in her bedroom.  At first I could not get it to connect by WPS to the main box - it's only in the next room of her flat, so it's not a range issue.  Eventually I figured out that the main box required an internet connection in order that the mini box could get an IP address - which I did by hotspot off my phone whilst I was there.  (There's nothing in the set-up instructions telling users that.)

The next day, after everything had been on standby overnight, my mother told me that the mini box in the bedroom was no longer working - the error message is "you are not connected to Sky Q".

Can anyone advise, please, whether the main box requires a permanent internet connection in order to keep communicating with the mini box?

Many thanks.

Unless you've hard-set network details on each Q box (which may or may not be possible) then there needs to be a DHCP server at the property to assign IP addresses: this would typically be a service provided by an ISP router.

Your phone will have temporarily acted as DHCP server, but now the assigned addresses have timed-out.

Might be able to get it to work again by assigning a fixed address bit think whenever it goes wrong again it might tey to activate via the internet.

My land line stopped working. I need it to work in order to receive calls and in case of emergency to call.

What are you trying to achieve?

Re: Does Sky Q Mini Box require broadband?

So I have a good WiFi connection in our garden room at the bottom of the garden. Vodafone sent a booster but it's not strong enough. Sky is fine as I've run an ethernet cable from main box to mini

Do you mean you don't have a good wifi connection and want to use the sky box as a wifi hotspot for your phone/other devices?

Couple of approaches

Does the vodafone booster have an ethernet socket for the uplink? If so you could put an ethernet switch at the end of the cable you already have and plug both the sky mini and vodafone device into that.

Or you can turn on wifi hotspot mode on the sky Q box in the installer's menu (001 Select when hovering over the Settings title on the menu)

I think the first would work best.

Re: Does Sky Q Mini Box require broadband?

It's the 2nd option, I've turned it on via main box. And I see a strong WiFi icon starting with SKY****. Do I connect to that

Indeed

Edit: Forum won't let me post such a short answer so here's a nice poem by John Burnside

About suffering, they knew no more or less
than we do, being

housed in luminescence;
a local cumulus

of   feverfew and jade
reduced to void, the tower overthrown,

the bells upturned.
I see one now, impoverished

and old before his time, a lesser man’s
subordinate, or master to a trade

he never asked for.
Burdened by the weight

of  office, or the whim of  some mad king,
he stands alone, above the dark lagoon,

and watches, while the city fades from quartz
to plum, from plum

to cochineal, a restless drift
through subtleties and shades

he cannot
capture, though he magnifies the whole

and loves it all the more, for being
useless, fleeting, governed by no rule,

a headlong and unmasterable now
that slips away, one pier light at a time.

Re: Does Sky Q Mini Box require broadband?

It asks for a password, so I tried the main router password and that doesn't work, is it a generic one

Where a Sky booster or Mini box hotspot is functioning correctly it broadcasts the same SSID and uses the same password as the router.
