Connection Issues using TP link access point.

I have Virgin fibre and have a Sky Q box in an annexe using a TP link access point connected to the main router. I can connect to main Sky box and get programmes but after approx. 10 seconds the connection drops and checking the setting it shows no access to the internet. The access point is connected to the 2.4 ghz port on the Virgin router. I can get BBC iPlayer, channel 4 etc. on the TV so there is no issue with the connection to Internet over the TP link. Can anyone explain why I can’t get this working? Thanks.

It's because the Q's networking is awful

does the TP-Link node have an ethernet socket?

Re: Connection Issues using TP link access point.

The TP link is connected to the Virgin Media router by Cat6.

Ah that might the problem

When your wifi is 3rd party you need to connect both the main box & mini to the network via ethernet, otherwise it will use a wifi connection generated by the main box to connect & not use your network

The annexe sky box is connected to the TP link WiFi which is connected to the main Virgin router by Cat6. The main Sky box is connected to the Virgin router by WiFi, should this be connected to the router by an Ethernet cable.

...because Q doesn't support 3rd party meshes or extenders particularly well.

It might work via the Ethernet route (I used to do this) but I found sharing the network caused other performance issues.

Best solution is to hardware using dedicated network - or get supported extenders from Sky.

hi @DC100

I am not 100% sure how your mini box is connected.

Although no guarantees it will work then you will need to connect your main box to your network via ethernet - either directly to the router or to an access point & also use ethernet connection to your access point (i.e. both connected to your network via ethernet)

If you don't, as mentioned it will try to connect via a 5Ghz wifi generated from the main box.

As @PandJ2020 inidicates the most stable connection is ethernet direct bewteen the boxes or you could see if SKY would provide a booster which might work if placed suitably between the boxes

Re: Connection Issues using TP link access point.

I have had a connection from the annexe sky box to the main house box but this only lasts for about 10 seconds then drops the connection. Have done this several times.

Which might indicate a suitably placed SKY Q  booster would suffice but is no guarantee

Yup, same problem I had when connecting to a 'not supported' WiFi access point.

Ok - I wasn't talking about backhaul but useful info. Can you get ethernet from the mini to that tplink thing? And put a switch behind it so that the mini can also get to the router hard-wired.

Signal direct from the mini to the Q is too weak.
