Connecting srround sound to Sky Q

Hi everyone. I've set up a home cinema surround sound at my dad's and I just can't get it working with Sky Q. It works with the DVD and Portable (I pad etc..) but just not with Sky Q. It's an old LG system. It only has AV ports at the back and no HMDI or Optical port. I've brought a cinch cable for the system. AV to Optical but still no joy. I've also set the settings on the Sky Q to PCM. could anyone help me out? I've been racking my brains for days to sort this out for him but no joy. I've also tested my personal soundbar out on his Sky Q and it would perfectly fine. I don't know of I'm doing something wrong or it's just simply not compatible. Cheers

hi @Martmart86

Is the Optical to RCA/Cinch definitely an optical to analogue converter ?

Is it powered - I am fairly confident that all converters will be powered

There are quite a variety of converters on the likes of Amazon from around £10 upwards

Maybe upload a pic or give a link to sales page

hmmm - although I have no personal experience of one, that looks the right sort of converter.

Possibly a silly question but did it come with a power supply

Yes it came with a usb power supply and lights up on the converter. It's truly baffling me 🥴

Just double checking that you set the Optical output setting to Normal & not just the HDMI output

Sorry I know this sounds a silly question but do you mean set to normal on Sky Q? If so I have. Thanks

Really clutching at straws here - have you tried connecting to a different input on the sound system (temporarily replacing the DVD say)

Yes that is what I was checking as there are 2 separate settings on SKY Q, one for Optical & one for HDMI

Re: Connecting srround sound to Sky Q

I've tried all ways at the back of the system. The only thing I haven't tried is the antenna port at the back as my dad doesn't have an antenna in the wall anymore. I have a feeling it's something simply but I just can't get me head around it. It's a 2010 system. Whether it's so old to support Sky Q I'm not sure. It's my old system but back then we have have Sky. Just makes me thing maybe Sky has put a block on the connection. Cheers

2010 is not really that old

The antenna has nothing to do with any audio (likely yo be for FM, or possibly DAB, Radio)

if the audio system takes :L/R analogue as you seem to be saying I am not sure why it should not work

Unless of course one of the cables themselves is faulty or even the SKY Q box (but that does seem generally rare ) - SKY Q optical should work via such an adapter

No problem, I think my best bet is to contact sky tomorrow and explain the situation. I really appreciate your help. Thank you. Cheers

you can try them but I doubt there is anything more they can suggest

Just out of interest are you able to quote the model number of the AV unit so I can see if there is anything in the manual that might  give me any other ideas to try (although I can't think of any)

One further thought - again clutching at straws - does the DVD player have an optical output that you could try the converter & leads with - I know some do have them.
