Best setup for Sky Q

Hi All

I have been running Sky Q with Starlink flawlessly for over a year now , but time has come to swap back to Sky Broadband 900Mb . (cheaper and faster )

This means that I will be getting the Sky 4.2 hub .

Question is...whats the best ( ie fastest downloads etc ) setup. I will be able to connect the main Sky Q box via ethernet or wifi...whichever is better. The Sky Q box is the newer one with the 1GB ehternet port.

So ....wifi connect between the Q box and 4.2 Sky hub or cable. ? I have 3 mini boxes in the house which will be using wifi and a booster.

Only the sky TV will be runnning directly off the 4.2 hub. I have a TP-link system running the house devices which will then connect to the sky 4.2 hub using one of the 1GB ports .

This way I keep the tv and house traffic on seperate networks .... ( this is how I got Starlink to work so well !)

cheers

Guy

Re: Best setup for Sky Q

Good afternoon, your Sky Q and internet setup sound well thought out!

I think either option is going to work well. If you don’t mind the wires, personally, I would opt for a cable connection. In general, wired connections are faster if the device supports a high-speed connection.

For ethernet cables, if possible, make sure it says category 5e on the cable, because your internet is so fast.

I don’t have first-hand experience of how well the Sky Q box performs on a wired connection. Perhaps some of the other customers could provide input in this area.

I have my Sky Q box connected via Wi-Fi to third-party broadband (Speed 900Mbps), so it is using the 2.4Ghz channel. Its performance is quite satisfactory using this Wi-Fi setup. Menus are quick, and downloads are fast enough in practice. If I try to watch an Ultra HD download it comes up with the ‘ready to watch’ message in mere seconds, no wait.

Re: Best setup for Sky Q

I doubt if anyone would need a download speed approaching 1gbps to their SkyQ irrespective of whatever the broadband speed or the NIC. The speed only needs to be quick enough so you can watch the content and download it at the same time, so that would probably be around 30Mbps which is more that enough to watch HDR on any streaming app.

I'm sure these speeds are capped by Sky anyway to preserve bandwidth to their servers.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

Your Q is never going to download at anything close to 1Gb

Ethernet is way more reliable though. I would use that every time if practical.
