When is my data getting used

I would like to know how to find out when my data is getting used? My son says he really only uses data when he's out but he must be using it whilst at home so I'd like to check?

You can't unless the device records it.  Most devices simply tally the data used by app.

If the phone is connected to Wifi at home then it will not be using mobile data. As advised above the phone itself will show what app is using what data.
