WhatsApp messages

I've been charged for WhatsApp messages to Canafa last month but never been charged before.  My Grandson says I should not have been charged as WhatsApp is free by Wi-Fi.   Any advice/ suggestions please

You might be charged if you were using mobile data and not Wifi so is this what happened ?
