However, this gives access to your usual package which won't include calls to Canadian numbers which are charged at International rates, I.e. £2.50 per minute and 75p per text.

If there's no WiFi then I'd question the availability of cellular data.
'Cheapest' would almost certainly be a local SIM, because as @PandJ2020 indicates, local call/text use is extremely expensive when using a UK bundle.

It might be worth enabling that as it reduces the call/text charges noticeably.
