How do I get a SIM free phone

Hi 

I have a new phone from Sky and want to remain on a data plan from another provider and keep my number . The data plan from sky was zero cost.

3 questions:

1.Do I need to request a pac code  when putting the sim in? Note I will not be activating the sky sim card.

 I think I had to do this for my daughter but want to double check 

2.Or just transfer the sim ? and I will keep my number? 

I have whats app for business so concerned. 

3. Do i need to back up anything?

In that case just use the sim you have from the other network in your new phone as you can't not use their data plan on a Sky sim.
