New phone - but have i have no phone number

I have received a new phone but have no phone number. The sim has been put into the phone and the phone activated with SKY. I text Stac to 75075 and had a reply back saying to put in my date of birth and text it to 75075 however i have NO old number to cancel so i'm confused.  Why have i NO new number from the start?

If you have put the sim into your new phone then why are you texting for the STAC code as this cancels it if the sim is with Sky.
