Identify theft
I received a letter chasing debt for a Sky Mobile Account set up in my name, I have never had a Sky Mobile Account.
I immediately called the number on the letters (Sky Mobiles enquiry number) to report the fraud and reported it to Action Fraud.
That first call with Sky Mobile was very painful, but I thought I had managed to report the identify theft. I was told I would hear back from them in 72 hours. This did not happen (I am slightly worried they have actually emailed the fraudster).
I also received another letter from Sky saying a debt had been passed to their credit collection agency, although it is not clear if this is the same account or another one.
I called the debt collection agency and they to,d me no debt had been passed to them. I then called Sky Mobile again to find out what was happening.
The first time the call went dead after the operator had said they would talk to someone and sort it out - I was being polite!
On the second call after speaking to three people including bizarrely one in account retentions I think I may have managed to report it but what worries me is that they told me there was no log of my precious call. This time I have been given a reference number (last time I was told I couldn't have one). I have also emailed the address on the letter that said the debt had been passed onto a collection agency and asked for the email to be logged as a compliant. I didn't not receive a response confirming my email had been received which would be normal for a corporate inbox.
The whole process seems to be geared to make this type of fraud impossible to report as it requires you to know the account details to be able to report anything and of course all I know is my name, address and the reference number on the letter - I don't know the mobile phone number because it isn't mine!
The only data I am aware of about me that has been stolen is my name, address and date of birth so I am shocked that someone has even managed to set up and. If. there is other personal data out there that has been used to create this account I need to know what so I can protect myself.
Sky are not taking this seriously and their fraud department seems to be invisible. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do next if I don't receive a positive response in the next couple of days from the, as I have lost all confidence in them resolving this and am starting to worry in case the is a very sophisticated form of fishing going on.

Re: Identify theft
I share your pain having also been a victim of bad actors setting up sky mobile accounts in my name and address to acquire 3 mobile phones. I've raised complaint, registered with Action Fraud and have been told my case is being investigated by the Fraud Team. My experience is that even though an investigation was carried out, and the helpdesk operative informed me on 11th June that my case was resolved and no more action will be taken, I still get weekly messages from their outsourced Credit Agency telling me I owe over £3K.
Why would Sky pass this debt on when allegedly its been resolved and why are they impossible to contact. I despair at trying to get through various helpdesk personnel to get to the truth about this investigation but will go through the motions.
Given the level of fraud and identity theft you would think Sky would 1. Increase their checks on new accounts 2. Have a dedicated fraud helpline to avoid clogging up the helpdesk who really are there to sell you things!
