Extortionate roaming charges!

Whilst on holiday in Tunisia I turned my data roaming off before leaving the UK and didn't turn it back in until my return 4 days into my hols somehow 44mb of data was used which is a very small amount sky have basically called me a liar and turned it on! However I was staying in a hotel with full WiFi coverage and had no need ti turn data roaming on.. sky are trying to £190 for 44mb! Insane £4.32 per mb.. also to rub salt in a wound, Sky have just stolen 227gb of data out of my piggyback! Maybe I should charge Sky for my stolen data if so at £4 per mb Sky would owe me £980,000! Crazy currently a very unhappy customer who has been with sky 15+ years

Your phone must have connected to the cellular network to have been charged.  I would always recommend flight mode (which can still use WiFi but will not connect to cellular)

I presume this is simply data expiring after 12 months as per the terms.

So you made sure both mobile data and roaming were turned off ?

All data remains in the piggybank for 12 months.

Re: Extortionate roaming charges!

I've never had an issues before and travel abroad often.. I understand the terms and conditions but seems crazy that I can be charged nearly £200 for 44mb but Sky can take 227gb without qs much as an email to explain.. I wo t ve paying the charge.. direct debit will be cancelled and all services cancelled I'm out of contact so I'll go elsewhere.. I'm on sim only so I don't have a contract to effect my credit score either so good luck getting the money sky..

@Syspas

Emails or letters were sent out in April 2024 outlining the changes to the time limit on data in Piggybanks. If you cancel the payment method you won't be able to cancel the service.

Hi @Syspas  while it's your choice what you do, your phone has connected to the local network and incurred the charges. You are liable for them. Sky will (and have done many times) refer the debt to a credit agency who will persue the debt through the courts. It's never a good idea to just cancel payment methods etc. try engaging with Sky to see if they will reduce the charges as a goodwill gesture.

@Syspas I don't believe you can.  Any credit will be used against future bills on the account.

@Syspas

You will need to contact Sky and ask about refunding to your bank but refunds are usually credited to your Sky account and used for future payments.

Re: Extortionate roaming charges!

Hi Syspas, this is very encouraging to hear that after you went via Cicas you have gotten your money back.  I also have had a huge bill for Data Roaming while my son took a day trip across a border to a non EU country despite me setting up spend caps on all our Sims.  Seems Roaming spend caps dont make an ounce of difference with Sky.  My complaint for credit has just minutes ago been declined so my next action is Cicas.  Hopefully i will also be successful.

Re: Extortionate roaming charges!

Hi the rules in my favor within a week and got a kind of apology from sky.  We're sorry but no credit will be applied in future.  They still haven't changed the wording though so still looks as if you can set the Roaming Data spend limit.   Just had the credit applied to my mobile account today.
