2 minutes in Cape Verde 45£ data charges?

I came through and landed in Cape Verde to a text off sky about charges for Cape Verde. Immediately after sending 2 messengers "I've landed safe" on Facebook, I got a "you've used 80 percent of your £45 cap"

I had not gone on anything else, and immediately turned off mobile data.

I have now got 45 quid in data added to my phone bill, making it very expensive and I didn't do anything but sent 2 messenger messages.

how can that be justified. I cannot get in touch with a sky team abroad and have changed cap to 0£ now but that is disgusting charges.

Any advice?

@Steph825  The moment you landed your phone would have connected to the local network.

Your phone should have been in airplane mode before you landed as this will have prevented such charges, in addition the charges you have incurred are correct for Rest Of the World as detailed in Sky Mobiles charge tariff.

From Skys website:

Don't want to be charged for roaming? Just turn off data roaming and mobile data in your phone settings before you get to your destination. And don’t call or text while you’re away.

Data charges in Cape Verde per MB £4.32

Like you I'm a customer here, Sky Employees are clearly identified as such.

Obviously too late now but always check the tariff for any country you are entering.

When you return to the UK see if Sky are prepared to apply any goodwill but the charge is correct.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

@Steph825

As you've discovered, unlike the other islands off the north and west coast of the African continent the Republic of Cabo Verde is an independent sovereign country rather than a department of an EU nation where £2 a day 'roaming' fee to access a UK data allowance would apply.
