The 'VIP Upgrade' from Sky+ to Sky Q is typically 'free' (as in no up-front fee) but beware of hidden costs such as a mandatory Q Mini box (with associated Multiscreen subscription)

Also note that Sky no longer facilitates reversion from Q to Sky+ during a 'cooling off' period: it's either keep Q or cancel Sky.

That's correct, because the current Sky Go app is descended from what was the Sky Q app.

So what do i use if i am a loyal sky user for over 25 years , i dont want Q as I have a house where I am not the only occupant and therefore multiple sky boxes , and i current use the Sky plus app to add programmes to my Sky box ?

You can continue to use the Sky+ app until it stops working (or the device hosting it fails, as the app is no longer available to download onto a replacement device)

Sky are very unlikely to put Plus functionality into Go because ultimately they want everyone off the Plus platform: Q now has something like 80% of the satellite subscription base.
