That's not going to happen.

The full refund being offered for Sky Live is more or less an admission from Sky that they got it wrong and that the product wasn't good enough.

Sky Glass gen1 on the other hand, was (for Sky) a huge success. They sold tons of them, many more than Sky Live. If it was fatally flawed then more people would have complained, and the product would have been recalled. Instead it spawned the gen2 Glass TV and the Glass Air. These are high profit margin pieces of hardware which continue to sell. Sky Live was not.

Sky Live was a gimmick - an add-on which arrived too late to be of much use, delayed by the botched power supply which necessitated a re-design of the USBC/HDMI cable.

My guess is that it didn't sell in anything like the numbers Sky hoped. The numbers of people who bought a Glass TV just so they could add Sky Live and make zoom calls on it would be tiny. It's better for Sky to retire it now, kill it quickly and try to forget it ever happened.

I think I'd disagree: it's more likely the service was acceptable for those who bought into it but there were never enough of them to make it viable, nor was it a sufficient attraction to gain new Glass users to the platform.

True. I was probably being harsh by saying it wasn't good enough.

You're absolutely right in saying that it was perfectly adequate for those that bought it. It would have been a much more attractive proposition to more people had it released alongside the original gen1 Glass TV in the midst of the Covid pandemic. The chance to have video calls with loved ones via the TV, and to use the watch together feature (did anyone ever use that?!) during the various lockdowns would have been a definite selling point.

I can't think of another product in recent memory that has been on release for such a long period though (it launched in June 2023), which has been fully refunded after the closure of the service attached to it. That's got to be unprecedented, for Sky at least.

The difference is that Sky Live cameras still work: it's the underlying service which is being somewhat abruptly discontinued despite some (presumably) having only recently been acquired.

If your Soundbox was within a warranty period then you might have had a claim, and there are still some units hanging around second hand.

The likelihood is that Sky had one batch of Soundboxes manufactured in 2016-17: it was discontinued as a product after Comcast acquired Sky Group.  From memory the last sales were in about 2020, so even those are now years out of warranty.

Re: We’re saying goodbye to Sky Live

Why they released the gen 2 with more nits etc. But not even an upgrade option for gen 1.

Re: We’re saying goodbye to Sky Live

They may still work but no service to support it, so its useless  , zoom was a big part for me.

Peak brightness is a function of the physical limits of the backlight array: Sky had already pushed the Gen 1 LED panel as far as it could reasonably go with a firmware update.
