Sky change broadband speed requirements.

Just read this may be of interest.

Will customers have to revert to Q?

This could answer many issues 'some' customers have and are experiencing.

Re: Sky change broadband speed requirements.

@Anonymous @Why would stream/glass customers revert. If they have issues then they may, but if their service is working well and they only receive 24mbps, Sky aren't just going to cut them off. This is about sky going forwards making sure that customers jVe sufficient broadnand speed. Why anyone would choose a streaming service with any broadband speed below 80mbps is beyond me anyway. It's just common sense

Re: Sky change broadband speed requirements.

Not all broadband providers are the same

There is also different types of broadband systems been used that results in very varied different performance regardless what your download and upload speeds are with your broadband provider.

Some broadband providers need to do some changes on their system when new streaming devices are released or device gets a new firmware version.

Problem is sometimes broadband provider are not aware a new device is having issues

There can be lack of testing or liaising with different broadband providers with streaming devices providers.

Netflix/Amazon/Disney+/BBC iplayer etc use different video compression methods compared to some IPTV providers that provide live tv broadcasts

Some IPTV live TV will require better broadband connection than you would require to use likes of Netflix

Some customers will have excellent broadband connections in their homes and not have issues that some other customers get.

Some customers are using 4G/5G mobile broadband with Sky Glass/Sky Stream

Some customers will not have unlimited usage with their broadband package they on

Some broadband providers routers they provide are not great

@Anonymous I've come from Sky Q to Sky Stream it's a matter of choice really

And what speeds you want that fit your pocket

I've got fast enough speeds but doing a network speed check via Netflix on my smart tv 43.41mbps

Or via the Netflix app on Sky Stream it's 44.39mbps

Yes I have Ultrafast 1 broadband

Have the wireless connection as I hate wires plus my router is some distance away from the Sky Stream box

It's not down to common sense it's down to what you can afford

Simple really

Re: Sky change broadband speed requirements.

It's not always down to what you can afford, it's down to availability of broadband speed.

This isn't a critical post or a dig at Sky or anybody on these forums, just an article I read that I thought may be of interest especially as every day there is a post concerning connectivity whether to hard wire or not, as simple as that.

As for your comment on customers reverting, obviously they will not revert on a whim but speeds may be a factor for them to consider in achieving a stable service. Perhaps Stream isn't the best for their home network or it could be the answer to their needs.

A lot of people don't understand speeds anyway actually I'd say very few do understand speeds so maybe for the Tech savvy it is common sense but for many indeed most they will rightly need hand holding.

Read posts clearly before jumping in.

Take it or leave it and move on!

There is also a difference between speed and bandwidth which may make a lot of difference to Glass/stream. Confusingly they use the same abbreviation and bandwidth is never quoted.

Maybe not for you @Anonymous plenty of broadband speeds available but they all don't cost the same

So again due to what you can afford or unless I read the memo wrong

No, but it would provide extra leverage should they want to outside the cooling off period: Sky is effectively admitting that they seriously underestimated the minimum bandwidth, and unfortunately the much lower figures are now permanently present in all the historical reviews of Glass and Stream.

Re: Sky change broadband speed requirements.

@TimmyBGood

This was my point really but I didn't want to go so far as to say this could be an issue for Sky but as per the link posted by @RobertS83  then answers are being sort.

Personally I think this could be huge for unsatisfied customers to get out of contract and it is a veiled admission by Sky that there are issues.

It kind of confirms why many customers have no issues where on the flipside many do.

Actually long-term this is a best way forward as it will hopefully stop the move of customers over to Glass/Stream until such time as Sky get the system stable.

Of course the forums here will be weighted towards negativity and problems but I genuinely believe Sky have not helped themselves in over promising over promoting and how the perceive the system should operate against how it actually performs.

Re: Sky change broadband speed requirements.

Sky really have dug themselves a hole here.

They have no option but to let those leave with speeds lower than 25mb.

Some could even argue misselling at the outset and request reimbursement.

I am still toying with the idea of Apple TV with Now or give Stream another go from Q but this launch (over a year in) is clearly a mess of their own creation.

Re: Sky change broadband speed requirements.

@Ben1980

I was a loyal Sky customer from the days of the white dish and 5 channels but the move to Glass & Stream really exasperated me. I still took six months before saying enough and as price increases kicked in that was it. A beta product and pushing prices up in my opinion was not ethical.

I was never an Apple fan I don't have an ipad or iPhone but decided to give Apple a go. It took a while to adjust but now I find Apple TV outstanding for quality and costs. With the TV Launcher app it's a game changer.

However, Sky have not lost me entirely as I subscribe to NOW which I find works without issue plus its AD free, hurrah no skipping. Yes it's not 4K but the Apple TV upscaling is outstanding.

At the end of the day it's a personal choice.
