Disability allowance

Just want to know if I can claim disability allowance for my husband being disabled

Thats not a question for Sky, I'm afraid.

 

Sky do have a social tariff for broadband, but it's available only to the accountholder.

@SKONJOANIECKI lf you mean disability living allowance (DLA) which for adults has now changed to personal independant payments (PIP) you would need to contact DWP

One of the ways in which Sky can support its disabled customers is by offering a disability allowance. This could take the form of a discount on their monthly subscription fee or additional services that cater to their needs. For example, Sky could provide audio description services for blind or visually impaired customers, or sign language interpretation for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Hello, I do appreciate the incentive for offering disability allowances to the needs of those who have disabilities. However, Sky is a business and a company, not the state who offers welfare.

 

Sky signs up to the policy of enabling those who social needs to have broadband now at a reduced price - as aforementioned in a post by @Mark39  

 

Sky can just as easily remove this, as it is a business policy consideration to help attract those who can't afford broadband prices to enable accessibility when working from home and to seek work, to name a few for example.

To take matters one at a time. 

1 - If the OP wants to claim PIP they should not contact DWP. DWP have no advice function. Better to approach an advice service such as CitA, a law centre or a local authority welfare rights service to establish whether your husband is likely entitled in the first place before contacting DWP.

 

2 - no-one is asking Sky for "welfare". They're asking for help, which is a slightly different concept. The state increasingly doesn't provide welfare else we wouldn't be seeing record levels of food banks, personal debt and so on. 

3 - whilst Sky does have a social tariff this is basically a copy cat tick box policy which on examination, makes little sense. Firstly it's only addressed to those on means-tested benefits. This ignores the massive numbers on disability benefits and the evidence that most of the latter use said benefits to pay for daily living expenses. Secondly, it ignores the fact that many with long term health conditions are more likely to be socially isolated/housebound and thus reliant far more than those on MT benefits on their TV. Thirdly a significant number of people on MT benefits are only there because their disability benefit creates an entitlement to a MT benefit. 

4 - Yes @Kevin-7248  Sky is a business but they're not likely to be removing social tariffs any time soon given the ongoing impacts of both Covid and the so-called cost of living crisis. They're obligated to provide social tariffs but it also makes business sense to do so unless you want a significant number of people, already facing brutal decisions like food or heating, to simply up and leave. Given the lack of accessibility choices I won't be doffing my cap any time soon to thank them for their often expensive and poor service. Rather I'll continue to lobby for improvements on multiple fronts. Ultimately we are customers. We have a choice and we can leave. So, let's not have any kind of attitude that we're somehow lucky to get what we have. We're really not. Without us they don't exist.

There's no attitude in my comment about being lucky to have anything. I'm a customer, like you, utilising what Sky has to offer and either agreeing or disagreeing by sharing an opinion. I too am only sharing an opinion on what the OP has asked and gave a comparison that sky is not the state who hands out welfare. 


I merely stated the obvious of sky being a business, and then, stated what they offered. I then provided an opinion of support and direction. As I always do. I'm not here to lecture someone on who can go where for state welfare and then expect a condescendingly reply saying I have an attitude. 

So if you wish to patronise me, feel free to keep your opinion to yourself.

And you weren't patronising us by, wrongly, pointing out that Sky is a business who can afford to withdraw such services? In reality only 55,000 households of 5 million eligible for social tariffs as of April 2022 have taken up such offers. That's broadly 1%. You hoped that your post helped in some way. Given that context I do not believe that it does. People need to be made aware of social tariffs and encouraged to take them up. Suggesting that Sky is a business who could withdraw them implies that we should be careful else we lose the little we have. Again, given the context, I think it's entirely reasonable to disagree. What's needed here is encouragement. 

As best I can tell you're not an administrator here so I'm afraid you don't get to tell me to keep my opinion to myself. If you dont like my response then by all means offer a different opinion.
