Generate app password for Classic Outlook

Hi

I have seen many similar questions but they all seem to have been solved some time ago. I am moving to a new PC (with Outlook Classic so I can use my current .pst file) but need an app password to link to the POP server. If I follow the Yahoo link to generate the app password it takes me to my Sky screen that does not allow me to do it. I have telephoned Sky who have said I need to contact Yahoo. I have contacted Yahoo (only a bot at the moment although a ticket has been opened) who has said it should be Sky providing me with the information. I have years of saved emails in Outlook so would like to continue t use it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, please...

@phbr Sky have withdrawn the password generator, I'm afraid. Does Classic Outlook not accept your Sky password?

I'm afraid not... just tried again. Yahoo suggests it needs one so I'm surprised neither Yahoo nor Sky will allow me to create one.

@phbr the password generator used by Yahoo is different from the one formerly used by Sky. Sky are believed to have shelved their app password generator for (well founded) security reasons.

Thanks for the info... I'll wait until Yahoo support get back to me and see what I can do then... although I don't hold out much hope!

Although I believe some other clients can import .PST files, but I've never tried it.(edit: apparantly they will need the .PST file converted first)

I am still communicating with Yahoo although they don't seem to understand when I tell them that when I click on the links they are sending me that I go to Sky and a dead end.

I have installed the PstPassword program but when I right click on Copy First Password and then right click on HTML Report - Selected Items the three password columns are blank. I guess it is not working for my pst file?

@phbr Yahoo can't help you with a Sky Yahoo Mail issue.

I don't understand why, or how, you can be communicating with Yahoo about a Sky email address. once they know you are referring to a Sky address they should refer you straight back to Sky. Possibly it's not actually Yahoo.

As for using the Mail PassView program, is Outlook working (not necessarily running) on the system you are using it on?

If so, do you not see a list of your email accounts, with the respective password under the password column?

Classic Outlook doesn't store the password in the PST file, it is stored encrypted by Credential Manager

I believe it is Yahoo as the emails were initiated from a chat on their site and come from Yahoo Customer  Care <customercare at cc.yahoo.com>. But they can't seem to help and just keep sending me the link to their security page which I tell them doesn't work. While I have been writing this email I have received a third email from them telling me to contact Sky!

I can confirm that Outlook is still working on my current machine (the machine that I want to move from) and the version is:

Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2607 Build 16.0.20228.20190) 64-bit

When I run PstPassword I see a list of all the .pst files (mostly backups), the three password columns are empty for all files including my "live" file. Should I be doing something differently?

Yes, you are doing something wrong, the program you want is called Mail PassView which I linked to in my earlier post. It will look like this when you run it.

Microsoft defender will declare it a "hack tool" (which I suppose it is) and so you will have to allow it to run.

You can then see the passwords and copy them from there.

The newest version of Outlook I have used it with is Outlook 2021, but it should work with all versions.

Once you get the generated password, make a note of it somewhere safe for possible future use.

My apologies... I saw "pst" on the page and went straight for that!

I have tried to download the Mail PassView zip file but stopped by Avast, even though I said allow (or whatever the wording was). Now I get site can't be reached so will need to look into that... I think it said I must wait 24 hours, so will try tomorrow if I can't work it out today.

When I followed your instructions, rather than see something on the page and go for that, it worked straight away. I suppose the thought of losing 20 years worth of emails (or probably more correctly the thought of doing something differently to what I had done for the last 20 years) made the last few weeks very stressful.

It has made me realise, though, that Classic Outlook may not last forever (although it might see me out!) and I may need to move to "normal" outlook in the future... but that's for another day. (My next problem is why my Excel spreadsheets had a row height of 10 point on my old desktop but are 9.9 on the new laptop - my older laptop also has them at 10 - but compared to this not really a problem at all.)
