I have been trying to connect two computers over windows remote desktop and the app version . I know I have the right password but it will not accept it. I have allowed it past my firewall. some seem to think the router is blocking it or I have to configure the port forwarding on the router. Can someone tell me how to do that and if the router show blocked connections
thanks

After a week of trying but failingto get passed password its woking! All I had to do was to unclick Require computers to use NetworkLevel Authentication to connect in settings system remote desktop. I also turned off network discovery turned on file and printer sharing and devices thyat use 40-56 bit ncription. also turned of password protected sharing.
i have no idea which one of these worked for me and I'd be grateful for more information
To get the account name right I used remote desktop assistant
Thanks to evryone who has helped

Re: unable to connect to a remote computer using remote desktop
For remote desktop to work the RDP needs to be forwarded through the router at the remote end.
This document explains the process of forwarding a port through the Sky router for other ISP it will be different:-

Re: unable to connect to a remote computer using remote desktop
I assume you are trying to RDP accross the Internet, right?
Have you first confirmed that you can RDP over your internal LAN?
(note that if you are using Windows Desktop the server machine must be the Pro version of better).
What error message are you getting and what authentication method are you using?

Remote desktop protocol (RDP) is on TCP port 3389 as a default.

Re: unable to connect to a remote computer using remote desktop
Ive have tried many things today and followed the port forwarding link provided putting in 3389 in start and end port and using TCP.
i haven't got win 11 pro on the laptop i am connecting from but I have got it on the laptop im connecting to and both are remote desktop enable. I have used the IP adress and the computer name on many attempts but it seems to get stuck when it ask for the microsoft (gmail) accounts's password. I know this is correct as i have signed in using it get it asks me to sign in again.
I am wondering now if i put the connecting from or the connecting to address in the port forwarding set up proceedure? sorry my brain has stopped working now but would appeciate answers using my simple language
thanks for quick replies

I assume the the gmail email you are using is the name of the Microsoft account you use to login to your Windows machines - correct?
That account must be available on the machine you are remotely connecting to. Can you log in locally on that machine using that account?
Does that account have local administration rights on the machine. If not, RDP access is not automatically enabled for the account.
Using an account that does have administration rights, go to Settings->System->Remote desktop
Then under User Accounts (at the bottom) click 'Select users that can remotely access this PC'
Click Add and then Advanced and then click Find Now.
Scroll the list and find the account you want to enable.
Click OK and then OK again.
Check the account is now listed and click OK again (don't forget this step).

Re: unable to connect to a remote computer using remote desktop
Nearly there! I managed to get the win 11 pro laptop to connect with the windows 10 pro but unfortunately I want the windows 10 pro to connect with the 11 pro laptop with the specific program on Thanks so much for the steps. in previous post! Although I did have to download remote desktop assistant to get the user name right. I did discover that the 11 pro laptop did have one more character in the password. I think i tried too many times to think straight. I'm still doing something wrong with the 10 pro laptop to the 11 pro connection but I'm sure now i have the correct user name and I did use both passwords. Did i use an administrator account? I dont remember! If you knw where i'm going wrong please shout but other wise watch this space !

Re: unable to connect to a remote computer using remote desktop
I;m still having problems remote connecting to the laptop running the programmes i need to monitor. For some reason it wont connect whereas it connects in the other direction. It either says password incorrect or an error. what i would like to know is can I set up a VPN for remote desktop connection?

The settings for Win 11 are slightly changed from WIn 10.
Make sure the check box for 'Require devices to use Network...' is NOT checked.
Also, the normal process is to use a standard Microsoft account to login and then add that account to enable RDP.
You mention you have different passwords on the two PCs; are you using local accounts?
This will work but it makes things more complex.
First make sure you can login locally on the Win 11 machine with the account you have set-up for RDP.

Re: unable to connect to a remote computer using remote desktop
i'm not there yet but i have a few more clues, I have downloaded the remote connection app on my phone but it still says username or password incorrect when i put the Computer Name or the IP address of my remote computer in. There is another option to use domain/user rather than the microsoft account but im not sure what its asking for sky\clarke perhaps?
I have tried to set up port forwarding with the remote's comuters IP adress as per steps 5 and 17 but i realise now that may have not been correct. As in Port forwarding with Sky Broadband
I have logged into my microsoft account on the remote computer successfully and it is an admin account. I do not understand why RDC programme and app will not connect to it when i enter the same details. Could it be that windows isnt activated with the product key?
