Wifi lag

We pay for full fibre 100 broadband which shows as 109 mb/s, however when gaming it lags a lot and the speed test shows download speed as 46.9 mb/s and upload speed as 16.6 mb/s upstairs (not a big house) - should the speed not reach upstairs? We only have this speed of internet in 2 rooms! Do sky offer boosters?

Re: Wifi lag

@Hannah54 Latency is more important for gaming rather than speed. What's the ping on your connection?

@Hannah54 it is quite normal for Wifi speed to drop on different floors. Wifi signals are lose strngth passing through solid objects and are blocked totally by metal so a lot depends on the layout and type of construction of your home. There are ways round this Sky sell a top up package called Wifi Max currently at £7.50 a month which gets you a faster hub and up to 3 extender pods which can help or you can buy your own wifi mesh system as I have done.

Gaming over WiFi is never going to be that good its not the bandwidth that is normally the problem but the latency as wifi signals can be affected by interference causing data packets to be lost and having to be resent causing ping spikes. Keen gamers use ethernet cables which have lower latency and are immune from interference wherever practical. On line gaming requires remarkably little bandwidth so 10Mb/s is normally ample.
