Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

Hi all, I have just upgraded to Sky Fibre, the Wi-Fi quality in my home is terrible and I am getting slow speeds in certain rooms.

What is the best router to upgrade to and how easy is it to setup?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Fttp or fttc?

Do you want to retain your call package?

For fttc

Sky hub with wifi switched off and a wifi 6 router in access point mode

Or tp link td w9970 plus wifi 6 router will replace sky hub

Fttp

Asus rt ax58u

Asus rt ax68u

Asus rt ax86u

Asus rt ax88u

Asus zenwifi xt8 directly attached to ont

----------------------------------------------------
Sky Stream , Sky Superfast, SR203 router, Tp link td w9970 + Asus RT AX58U (backup), Xbox Series X, google home mini, LG 43 inch UHD tv, samsung a5 2017 and samsung s21

If I get it right mark as answered
If I get it wrong humour me
If I say something you like give a thumbs up

Re: Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

Thank you for the reply, I have a fttp connection. I am right in saying that a fttp is Fibre direct to the router?

We don't have a landline connected.

Thanks

FTTP is fibre direct the property & will terminate at the ONT. Your router will be connected to the ONT with an Ethernet cable.

Re: Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

Yes that's what I have it's connected via Ethernet to port 4 of my original sky q hub that I have had 4 years.

The Wi-Fi around the house is terrible in some rooms.

Re: Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

Can you use any router?

Is the ont actually a modem?

thanks

Yes the ont is effectively a fibre optic modem. Any of the asus i mentioned will work either set to access point and etherneted to the sr203 or after sequential firmwarel updates to enable it to display dhcp option 61 will work directly connected by ethernet to the ont.

Client identifier (option 61) details

Anything@skydsl|anything

Will allow the asus to negotiate with sky servers allowing it to obtain the public ip address and replace the sr203 as a router

P.S. you mentioned sky q hub and port 4. Do you have photos of it both front panel and rear..  also i want to double check it is an ont you have as the sky q only has 2 ports and no telephone socket on the router

Is your ont something like this

Re: Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

Hey I'm interested in this.

How would the routers you've listed under FTTP work with the sky q mesh network - presumably the sky boxes would still create their own mesh for TV but the house WiFi would be carried by the zenwifi xt8 (for example).

We've just got sky gigafast FTTP and are keen to get better speeds for around the house.

Cheers, Dan

Re: Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

Hi Dan

I ended up changing my sky hub to ASUS XT8 and the speed and signal are spot on.

The SkyQ minis work on their own mesh and the Xt8 is separate. I think this works better because tv and internet are now on their own.

What is your budget? Do you need circa 5500 sq ft of wifi coverage? Do the looks of the router matter to you? Personally, I find the XT8 atheistically pleasing and would be my preference to a load of antennae sitting in the lounge.

Re: Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

Looks - not imporant - sits in a understairs cupboard. large 3 level house with garage, so coverage more important.

Prices range for £150 to £250. No real limit if real benefits...

From that list, just my thoughts and money no object, XT8 2 unit pack. Tri band and you can add further 'air mesh' devices/nodes to ensure coverage (up to 7 or 9 in total...but not all will show in the app if I recall)

Only you can decide though, it's your cash.

Re: Wi-Fi 6 Router for Sky Fibre

I have Xt8 and it's brilliant for speed and signal strength.

You can configure it to connect direct to the ont.
