Why can’t the sky router go into my DMZ

I've read a lot messages about people wanting to use their personal router directly connected to the BT ONT on FTTP but that means you forgo Digital Voice.

What I don't understand though is, why can't the Sky router with Digital Voice not sit in the DMZ of a personal router that is successfully connected to the ONT?

@golfgtiman the voice solution is not designed to connect as you want as Sky assume their customers will use the provided hub directly connected to the Openreach ONT which apparently the huge majority do.

The hubs remain a key part of Sky's diagnostic systems. The small minority who use 3rd party routers forgo both the voice solution and support from Sky. Most mass market ISPs seem to follow a similar model. A larger percentage of customers usecthird party wifi or run kit in double NAT configurations.

The possibility of changing the model to make use of third party routers simpler has been raised multiple times in meetings I have attended with the broadband team but Sky have consistently said they do not intend to do so. They have to permit third party routers to connect as an Ofcom requirement but they are under no duty to make that easier or supply support.

Chrisee, thanks for the prompt reply. I completely understand the point of view of Skyaas they cater to a mass market where I'm sure the majority simply use the Sky hub so no issues there.

However, I can't understand why, technically, the sky router in a "DMZ" behind a personal router would not work?

@golfgtiman

Because even in the DMZ of another router it would only get a local LAN IP. This means its not directly connected to the Sky network via a WAN IP. Sky have configured their digital voice system to work while directly connected to a Sky line and thats it so it'll never work via a DMZ.

Re: Why can’t the sky router go into my DMZ

Thought I'd come back to this thread to outline how I got round this!

I left Sky but by accident!  I use a VOIP company called LocalPhone.com and I requested them to port my VOIP 'BT landline' number (which I've had for years) to them, which they did. That triggered a broadband and phone line disconnect from Sky as it was treated as a port of my broadband service to LocalPhone (who don't offer Broadband!). I didn't want that (as I was happy with Sky) but long story short my VOIP landline number was ported to LocalPhone so I could access it via SIP on my DECT cordless phones. Then, as my BB was cancelled I was free to sign up to another BB provider which took 3 days to reconnect me.

@golfgtiman

It is quite common for this process to go wrong when porting just the telephone number to a VoIP provider and happens quite often, just a silly system that Ofcom and telecoms providers just don't understand and it needs addressing by Ofcom on rules for portability of telephone number with the separation of broadband services should be made possible.
