Very low internet speeds

Since about Friday of this week (4th August) my internet speed went down to 9.3/9.5Mbps when we're promised in the contract 100Mbps minimum and average speed has always been 145Mbps.

I ran an ookla test that has shown I have such low speed with no videos or anything like that running.

Is it possible that people downloading a certain fresh release of a game called Baldur's Gate 3 is slowing down the whole connection or is the problem elsewhere?

I tried calling about it but I was on hold for like 1h 30m with only a minute of actual person talk time before the hold lasted into the call center closing with no resolution and the Sky Help Team twitter has not responded to my query on that either.

If anyone knows what could could be going on I'd appreciate the information.

I already restarted the computer and changed the router port as well as did the router reset 3 times before anyone suggests those and I run on Ethernet cable

Then possibly the ethernet card is set to 10Mbps as @Chrisee  mentioned

If its a windows machine you can check the current settings and change them if necessary as shown below

to check what speed your card is currently set to :-

Go to the icon of the taskbar
Locate the icon Internet
Press on network and internet settings
Click on Ethernet
Click change adapter options
Double click on Ethernet. There, you get the speed, it can be 100 mbps or 1Gbps. If it is the second, we do not have to do anything, but if it is the first we have to configure the card

Then If you have a windows pc you can change the card settings as below

In the window where the speed was indicated, you have to click on properties
Check that the option Microsoft network clients is marked, if not, do it
Click on set up
We go to Advanced Options
Search Speed & Duplex
Change the value to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex
Accept

Also what category of ethernet cable are you using? Are all 8 pins wired?

Could you log onto your router stats page as shown below and wait for 10 seconds before posting the stats

@Iza19 run the connection test in the My Sky app as thst should test the line to your hub And can book an engineer if it finds an issue. Sky's network normally has ample capacity so even a major game release shouldn't cause issues with speeds to your hub. Not sure whether your ultrafast service is delivered over copper or fibre but if its the former it can be affected by the recent bad weather.

Only if that test doesnt help do you need to call Sky. Given the bad weather their call centres will be very busy hence the delay you experienced. If

Re: Very low internet speeds

The Speed Check on the Sky website isn't showing any issues and now we are running on Fibre cabling for over a month now

That shows 8Mbps downloading right now.  So if someones gets to downloading something first that would saturate your download speed very quickly

Re: Very low internet speeds

I've not downloaded anything past 2 hours as well as stopped any and all videos for the duration of these connection tests to ensure information is accurate and my broadband check comes up with this

@Iza19 as I see from your stats which you posted while I was writing my reply. Have you run a test on a diferent device and got the same result?.

While its possible your fibre service has an issues its pretty unusual but it has been known for even ethernet tests to show misleading results such as for example where a port has been misconfigured from Gigabit to fast ethernet (100Mb/s) and even restricted to 10Mb/s. If results are similar on a second result the rules thst out.

The top row wanoe shows rx bits per second of 8.1 Mbps of download apparently coming from an etherneted device

Re: Very low internet speeds

I ran the same test on an old laptop that I connected via cable and got the same results and I checked the Ethernet speed on the router settings and it is set to Gigabit Ethernet so that is not the issue

@Iza19 oddly a wifi test would be better so eliminating any ethernet issues. Your speeds look horribly close to a 10Mb/s connection after network overheads.

Re: Very low internet speeds

This was the issue for some reason. That adapter has randomly changed to 10Mbps limit

Iza19_0-1691303469761.png

Thank you so much for finally returning me the proper speeds
