Speed checker accuracy

How accurate is the sky speed checker?

Moving from a 150Mb/s package to 900Mb/s (min 600Mb/s download) i expected faster download speeds ping times appear to be reasonably constand and same as my previous package but the Sky speed checker always showed just over 150Mb/s on my last package when all other internet checkers showed less than 100Mb/s now on the "new" 900Mb/s package the sky speed checker shows just 84Mb/s over the minimum 600Mb/s to start a refund  and supprisingly all the other on-line speed checkers all still show the less than 100Mb/s that i had with my last package.

How is ti that the sky speed checker constantly shows 500Mb/s faster download speed than all the other OFCOM suggested speed checker sites when the results are obtained within less than 5 mins of each other?

The sky speed checker is the speed to your hub only and what is used for your guarantee 

other checkers will give you the WiFi or Ethernet speed at various points throughout your house and will vary with distance and device

@bazinbury the speed checker Sky use to test fibre spedds is known to under record so the speeds to your hub is probably higher than 640Mb/s - this came to light on my own connection which gets reported at 350Mb/s at a time when I can get 500Mb/s on a device. Sky know this is an issue of thecway their software runs the test..

 

To get a reliable speed test on a fast full fibre connection only use a device connected by a gigabit direct Ethernet connection. Tests run over WiFi often simply show the speed of your WiFi connection. If you have a black Sky hub that tops out at around 600Mb/s in the same room as the hub as it only uses WiFi5. The newer white Sky Max hub is WiFi6 and will give the full 900Mb/s in thecsame room. Move further away signal strength ans speed us lost as the signal is attenuated by passingbthrough walls etc.

I am connected to the hub with a LAN cable, it is the black hub, but the question remains valid, why do all other apps shown download speeds 500Mb/s less, than that shown by Sky, when they are taken witihin 5mins of each other all repoert the same IP address all have approximately the same "ping" and all reading are taken from the same p.c connected by cable ?

so according to your answer i am loosing 500Mb/s in less than 5 feet between the HUB and a p.c. connected to the HUb with a LAN cable and if all other apps are showing the download sppeds at the p.c. throught the sky hub then they are more accurate and a truer reading of what an end user can acheive

so according to your answer i am loosing 500Mb/s in less than 5 feet between the HUB and a p.c. connected to the HUb with a LAN cable and if all other apps are showing the download sppeds at the p.c. throught the sky hub then they are more accurate and a truer reading of what an end user can acheive

Is the network card on your computer able to support speeds higher than 100Mbps and if so have you activated it as some computers you will need to enable that function in the network settings 

 

also which type of lan cable are you using and what speed is it rated for?

You could indeed by losing anything over 100Mb due to various hardware limitations & configurations.

 

First thing to check is that your LAN cable is at least Cat5e. It should be printed on the sleeve. The "e" is important as "plain" Cat5 has a limit of 100Mb, which might be your issue. Even if it is Cat5e it may be worth trying another.

You also need to check your router's LAN ports are correctly configured, if there's an option. Which router do you have?

Lastly, as @mormegil said, ensure that your NIC is capable of gigabit & correctly configured.

Thanks for the reply, Im using the same black router Sky provided when they put the to fibre to the property connection in about 1 year ago but before i try adjusting any settings I will try a Cat 7 or Cat 8 ethernet cable first between the router and the pc and see if that makes any difference

I believe there's LAN port speed setting on that router. Make sure it's set to gigabit rather than fast.
