Slow Download Speed - Do I Leave?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice.

I am on Sky Broabnand 35, which sugests speeds of between 32MB and 37MB at my address and guarantees at least 30MB. But for quite some time I've been getting in the region of 20MB (today 21.8MB).

I went through Sky's online troubleshooter which just tells me to unplug everything and plug it back in again, which obviously I have done, and then claims to have fixed my broadband! Except it hasn't, because the speed is exactly the same and if you restart the troubleshooter it still says there "appears to be a problem".

By email, Sky have confirmed that I can change my package or leave without a penalty because they aren't giving me my guaranteed speed. But is there any point leaving? Its all the same wires, isn't it? So, would another broadband provider not have the same issue? For the record, I am not in a Virgin / Zzoomm / BeFiber etc area.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

@ChrisEJ1993 given Sky have given you the option to leave it looks likeky Openreach have refused to do work on your long line to enable it to offer the speed range the checker says itvshould support and the stats indicate. At some point they will change the database but if you order from another ISP now they will base their speed guarantee on the database but you are going to go through the same rigmarole as you have with Sky as in practice the line will deliver the speed you get now.

If mobile signal is poor the only other solution I can think of is Starlink which uses satellites but is quite expensive. This issue will only be really solved when full fibre is run to your property that could be years away.

@ChrisEJ1993 switching to any other isp using the same Openreach line will deliver  the same speed as it is the length and condition of the line thst sets the speed. Increasingly Openreach are unwilling to upgrade copper lines as they switch to full fibre which doesnt help customers like yourself stuck at the end of a dodgy copper line who get the message you have had.

One possible solution is mobile broadband if you have a decent signal as thst need not be prohibitively expensive.

Re: Slow Download Speed - Do I Leave?

Thanks @Chrisee that's really interesting. What I find frustrating is that the 4 houses in my road all have 900MB options for broadband but my block of 7 flats, literally 30 meters away, doesn't. Is there any way I can encourage Openreach to consider upgrading the block do you think?

@ChrisEJ1993 First check this site to see what if any plans are in place https://www.openreach.com/fibre-checker. It is also worth talking to whoever manages the block as they have to agree to allow Openreach to fit the new kit and what if anything  has happened so far. On small blocks Openreach will run a connection to each flat but in a block of 7 flats I suspect they would want to have a multiuser supply to the building then running internal fibre to each flat. That requires agreement from the freeholder if they are not ageeing to the work pressure from the residents can change minds. @ChrisEJ1993  Seems like there is a capcity issue in your area and as @Chrisee  points out that you are able to leave withour penalty from Sky they are not willing to fix this issue. Moving to another provider might then get the work done or come to the same as what Sky has done.

Seems a rock and a hard place just now.
