Sky Wifi Max Router with ADSL Connection

This post is to share my recent experience with the Sky Wifi Max products, in case it helps others in the same situation. I was recently covinced to 'upgrade' from the Sky Q router (SR203) to the Sky Wifi Max. Although this sounded like a sensible upgrade, it didn't work out well. I'm stuck with an ADSL connection as I can't get fibre. My download speeds on the Sky Q router are approx 15Mbps and very similar on wifi connected devices. When I installed the Sky Wifi Max router and extender (once getting past activation issues and a couple of calls to Sky support), the speed was topping out at approx 10Mbps. Wifi connected devices would not go much above 6Mbps (S21 Ultra, S9+ tablet, iPhone, Xbox X). I waited for nearly a week to see if the the line speed inproved and it didn't budge at all.

I called Sky support who tried to convince me the speed was no different than with the old hub, but after initially telling me I'd have to send my old router back to them, there was no trouble in them agreeing to cancel that part of my contract when I queried if there is a cooling off period (2 weeks apparently).

I reconnected my old Sky Q router and straight away it was hitting 15Mbps on line speed and the wifi connected devices were pretty much the same.

So this begs several questions for me. Why is the Sky Wifi Max router evidently slower in my setup for both line speed and wifi? I'm assuming it's not a faulty unit as it's brand new, so I wonder if anyone else with a similar set up has experienced the same issue. If so, presumably I'm not the first to have reported this issue to Sky (although they made it sound like I was). I'm wondering if this product is flawed by design for ADSL connections. If that's the case, I think Sky should not be promoting this to customers with ADSL type line connections. I'm just pleased that I didn't send my old router back straight away, because I'd now be stuck with a router that's approx 30% slower than the SR203.

Hi @Markygixer

It could be down to a couple things, either the WiFi on the Max hub isnt outputting as well as your older hub which is unlikely or the chipset for ADSL/VDSL on the Max hub isnt as good as your older hub. This could result in slower line speeds and is more likely to be the issue.

To be honest it fustrates me that Sky sell the Max hub to people who can only get ADSL because it offers no real upgrade to people stuck on such a slow connection.
