Sky Gigafast Isues

Good afternoon,

I had ultrafast (130 down, 30 up), over a bit of wet copper from the pole (which presumably had the fibre converter in), I upgraded 2 weeks ago to Gigafast full fibre, I have the fancy white box and the wet copper replaced by fibre, router connected at 999900kbps tried it with wired, got 130Mbps, realised the new hub was different (SR203 instead of SR204) so I switched them over, still 130 ish down, left it a few days no change so I contacted Sky - who said wait for 14 days (thought FTTP was pretty quick, but couldn't be bothered arguing), today marks the 14th day and surprise surprise no change, so I've just contacted Sky and spoke to an "expert", I explain everything to her, told her what I have tried (including factory reset several times, shutting down Wifi and just having the Fibre go into port 4 with my laptop tried in every other) and I got 150Mbps, with my servers plugged back in it reported 200, still not sure why, the connection to my laptop is CAT 6, which when in my work office gives me 980Mbps (1Gbps symmetrical), Sky "Expert" just kept saying it's only guaranteed to the hub, usual rubbish, and then promtly closed the call.

So - where do I go from here?  Sky are fobbing me off - they say they tested the speed and it is 900 to the Hub, and if it reporting correctly - she is right, but coming out of the hub is a very small portion shared between my laptop and the hub, I even tried another laptop even though I didn't think it was the laptop, different make, diferent chipset, but still no Cigar.  Any help appreciated.  Thanks!

Speed test was done with the WAN in Port # 4, laptop with a cat6 cable in port #1 (also tried #2 and #3 with the same result, the only device connected wifi turned off for testing, connection link was 1Gbps.

TIA

Can you try on speedtest.net and post that? Mostly interested in the latency & jitter figures on that one.

Also does your laptop have any sort of app installed that could limit the speed through some sort of QOS. Killer Networking is a typical culprit.

You could try opening up task manager while the test is running to see what network usage is showing and if an app is using CPU which is usually a clue.

Re: Sky Gigafast Isues

Hi @jamesn123 ,

Speed test result below.

No throttlng software laptop in my work office shows 980Mbps, which is  1G symmetrical connection.

Task manager shows all 0% usage until speed test then Chrome is using the most (which is understandable).

Some people stated that I should be able to connect to the ONT, others have said not, but I gave it a shot and it gave me a connection to the internet and the results were almost identical hovering around 200Mbps or less.

That is really weird, you should 100% not be able to get an internet connection if your directly connecting your laptop to the ONT without a hub. The ONT is not a router nor does it dish out IPs AFAIK.

Considering the above are you sure the laptop isnt connecting to your Sky hub via WiFi or something? Did you try completely disabling the WiFi card in Windows?

Okay thats a new one. That IP is a Sky public IP too.

@TimmyBGood @Chrisee @cookiemonsteruk @Highlinder

Any idea whats going on here? I am completely perplexed as to how a laptop is getting a Sky public IP assigned to it when connecting directly to the Openreach ONT. Is the Sky hub no longer doing any line authentication on FTTP? Does the ONT just give whatever is connected its public IP from the downstream exchange?

I guess Windows networking is now versatile enough to cope with such a thing by default if the upstream Openreach hardware is capable of offering a suitable protocol (presumably without any authentication required)

From memory it's always been possible to get a PC to be a router: it was just painful...

Although possible with Windows, I would not have thought Windows by default would do this. You'd think it would need to be at least enabled, if not configured first.

@TimmyBGoodWould be interesting to see how the PC would act in this situation.

If someone has helped give them Like.

If you have found this solution helpful please tick this as the answer.

WHatever is going on your connection is clearly not performing so we can escalate your post to Sky if you want to chat with them about it, otherwise it would be a phone call to argue it again.

Where the upstream is PPPoE I think it needs manual configuration in Windows*  but I'm guessing this is some flavour of DHCP.

*hilariously, a quick look online suggests Windows still refers to this as 'dial-up'

True, think its pretty scary someone can just plug a device into the ONT and get a connection directly to the internet with only the Windows firewall as protection😬

Re: Sky Gigafast Isues

@jamesn123 Laptop has a seperate firewall / AV, standard Win 11 Pro with no other settings changed on the interface, I just want it to work, maybe they have configured things wrong on the other side, so yes please on your offer to escalate it.

Thanks
