Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
Hi,
I have recently chosen the Sky fibre offering. I.e., the gigabit 900mbps broadband. Since being activated on 31st January I have never received the minimum guaranteed speed of 600 mbps. I waited for the initial 14 day period and reached out to sky towards end Feb who booked an engineer visit. He said that most devices can't do the 900 Mbps and most you will get is 550mbps. I am not sure that is true and I have tried via Ethernet and max i get is 550. I have an iPhone 11 Pro and know that the max on WiFi is compatible with WiFi 6. After a call with Sky today the only thing they can do is replace my router. The engineer said try getting a WiFi max router as that might give me better speeds. However, the Sky representative said I can't have it as I have Sky q tv box. Any suggestions will be really helpful.
My router stats are as below.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD On a wifi connection no matter how good you think it is, 500Mb/s is the norm that you would see with the SR203 (wifi5) device. Over ethernet connection it should be closer to the 900Mb/s, but
variables do come into play, server that you are trying to speed test too, your equipment response etc.
Max product would be quicker due to (wifi6) using the AX clients, but you are a definate NO due to having SkyQ as it is not compatable 100% correct from SKY.
Try this speed test link below with both wifi and ethernet. You can only have ONE device connected
because you do not know what the others are doing, its all shared... Post back your results.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@JimM1 Thanks for the quick response. I don't get why Sky is selling this service if I can't get the minimum guaranteed considering their equipment can't handle it. Anyway, used your suggestion and WiFi speed close to one router was 565mbps and Ethernet around 580mbps. So, might have to see Asus router. I am not keen on spending £200 though to get this sorted. Is there any other router which is cheaper and can increase the speed?

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
That the issue your test result do show you are getting the max speed
the package speed is determined by the speed to the hub not your wireless connection speed
the best think to do is to configure your internal network to get the best wireless speeds within your property and then to decide if you want to wait for max to be available or or if you are not using the telephone there are other threads here going over different third party hubs
personally I waited until my gaming pc that is connected wirelessly reached the package speed I was on and then upgraded as I improved components etc

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD With regards to the SkyQ that you have, do you have the main Q box connected by ethernet to the SR203 Sky Broadband hub, and do you also have any mini boxes elsewhere and if so how are they connected?

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@JimM1 The sky q main box is connected via Ethernet and no mini boxes. I have one sky broadband booster and another tp link range extender.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD Did you disconnect the Q box when running the Ethernet speed test?

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD And if the wifi speed test connects to the booster rather than to the router, you will have a drop in that speed test only, device to booster, booster to router, router to internet. hard to predict speed drop, but i would go 50% at least.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@mormegil Thanks, I understand the speed to hub part. Not expecting to get full speed or anywhere close to it. But, with Sky gigafast you no longer can see speed to hub anymore and the engineer confirmed as much. If I don't get the minimum speed even on ethernet then that isn't right.
Can I ask what you mean by waiting for package speed to be received? I have waited over a month since activation so does it take longer?

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@JimM1Yes, as you suggested had disconnected everything when I tried the test. The booster is on another floor and was switched off when I did the test.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD I asked, did you disconnect the Q ethernet before testing? There are known issues with Q connected that can slow the speed test down. Next was to be that test by taking Q out of the picture.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD The spped is shown as your connected speed on your stats and shows that you are on the GB sky package. Newer devices are always quicker than older, thats were improvements are made.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@JimM1 Sorry if I wasn't clear, yes Sky Q was disconnected and switched off so there isn't any interference. I have an iPad Air which is new which was used for WiFi speed test. Ethernet was via MacBook Air. I think the router is the problem and reading the link you had provided might be best to go for third party router but don't want to spend too much on it. I still feel that Sky should fix this or compensate me as clearly it feels like they are selling something that is not realistic with their router.

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD Before you go down that rabbit hole, do you have any other test device for ethernet, i do not use any apple products, windows and android only, and can assure you testing on ethernet is 900Mb/s
Thats not to say that there is not an issue, and have you looked at the broadband shield settings in your account, Apple with safari and in general are sometimes a little problematic on sky.
The wifi, at 500mb/s is about as good as it gets unless all the equipment is wifi6 compatable then there will be a slight increase, but wireless is a complete minefield...

Re: Sky Gigabit under minimum speed
@KashifMD When I first got fttp I was on the ultra fast then over time I upped it to the ultra fast+ and then gigafast
i spend a lot of time playing about with the wireless connection upstairs before I managed to match the max output of the 4.2 hub so once I did that I upgraded to the new max hub so I now get 900 mbps downstairs and around 700 upstairs via WiFi with a new gaming pc that can support that speed
