Sky Broadband ONT Box in own socket?

Hi,

When I got SKY Broadband installed the engineer put in the ONT box which he fixed to the wall and plugged in. The little instruction book that he left with it said not to plug the ONT into a multi-way adapter but to give it its own socket.

However I'd like to plug it into the surge protected multi way adapter I'm using for  the router and phone and for other electronic stuff, and I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever done this and have there been any negative effects on broadband etc?

@AnonymousThey say to have it in its own socket  as best practice. But as seen the ONT can be plugged into a multi-way adapter with surge protection. Have not seen anyone coming to the community forum saying that having it in such a way has had any negative effect on its performace.

@Highlinder thanks for the information. I'll give it a try in the surge protector and if I have any issues (I don't imagine I will) then I can always swap it back.

The only related device which typically doesn't like being plugged into such a strip is a powerline network adaptor.

@Anonymous when my ONT was installed 4 weeks ago the engineer plugged it into the 4 gang strip socket that was available  he never said anything about not plugging it into anything and then I had another engineer 2 days later to fix the mess of the wires he had made outside and again they were happy about it being plugged into a 4 gang strip socket

@Laing1 Well if the engineers themselves aren't too worried about this then I won't be either!

Update for everyone - for the past month I've had the ONT power supply plugged into a 2 way socket with a lamp and have had no issues.

@Anonymous like many warnings this is a belt and braces approach. The ONT uses a standard power supply and is perfectly happy connected to a power strip unless of course that strip is overloaded. So as long as you havent plugged in a couple of kettles, a toaster and a fan heater as well you should be fine but if you have and  the strip overheats/catches fire etc its not Sky's or Openreach's fault,😀

Thanks @Chrisee. I don't see the likelihood of the socket ever getting overloaded as it's only a 2 way socket and is tucked away into a corner betweeen the wall and an IKEA cabinet where the only things getting plugged into it are the ONT power supply and a lamp with a low wattage LED bulb in it.

So far so good.
