Sky BB + BT Landline

My sister(1) has Sky Unlimited BB only wich was originally O2 Unlimited untill Sky took over O2 some years ago, The router is still the one provided by O2 as Sky didn't send a Sky router just the billing was changed to Sky everything else stayed the same

The BT landline is in a different name at the same address this is the name of my other sister(2) who moved overseas some years ago and sister(1) just continued paying the paper bills when they arrived.

Since BT will updating phone to use broadband only it means having phone and broadband together as far as im aware?

If sister(1) upgrades her Sky BB unlimited to Sky Superfast 35 does it include landline and will sky take over the number and cancel the BT line automatically? And will sky supply a new router?

@FP2 first point Sky will replace the router if asked and it should be swapped out in any case as it wont have had any security updates in years. Sky automatically supply a voice line with every broadband install excluding a very few legacy lines. There is no line rental but you pay for calls as they are made unless you buy a call bundle.

I assume the BT line is separate copper phone line in which case you would have to cancel that with BT who are quite likely to refuse to talk to anyone but the account holder. It maybe possible to transfer the number to the Sky line but it wont be automatic. This is Ofcom's page on number porting.

Suggest who ever is the account holder for the Sky line gives them a ring and asks for the router swap and discusses using the Sky voice line and porting the BT number but given the complexity of two lines in different names I am not sure whether it can be done or not.

Re: Sky BB + BT Landline

When the O2 Broadband (this is standard BB not fibre) was set up one of the requirements was a BT landline was needed wich was already in place, as the broadband signal is sent down the BT line.

Now BT will be changing the phone lines to broadband only I dont know what other options she has

As far as I know she wont be able to carry on with the BT line once it requires internet for calls as the BB is with sky.

Upgrade Sky to sky superfast and pay £50 upgrade fee and £35 per month seemed the best option.

Maybe a new BB and phoneline supplier to replace both BT and Sky would be better? but would they be able to transfer from 2 seperate suppliers into one?

Re: Sky BB + BT Landline

The way I see it if the BT line is cancelled then she will have no internet either as it uses the BT line. or thats what O2 said when she took out the BB unlimited with them.

Both Sky and BT accounts are out of contracts as they have been active for many years.

@FP2 things have changed a lot since the service was boughtO2 sold their broadband to Sky in 2013! In theory you could ask a third ISP like Talk Talk to take over the service using the standard switching service but whether thst will work on such what sounds to be a legacy service I simply don't know @simon194 do you know? However a single provider for both services is something that is needed.

Your sister who is the Sky account holder could to talk to Sky to stat to sort this out but the 2 services being in different names is a further complication.

As I mentioned there are a few lines still on a service called Sky Connect that doesnt use the Sky network but Sky piggy back on the BT Wholesale infrastructure the vast majority of these have been moved to a Sky line your sisters' sound like it maybe in thst group.

Sky will only talk to the account holder
