Router statistics vs Sky App Speed test

I had an engineer attend my property today due to frequently lower than ideal speed to hub tests over about 3 weeks.

Long story short, I was on 500mb, consistently got around 550 to hub, upgraded to gigabit and getting around 620-680 to hub.

the engineer ran a load of tests and results were between 990-1.2gbps and no fault found was the outcome.

I've noticed a discrepancy between running a speed to hub via the sky app  and router statistics on my device.

Is the router statistics accurate or simply a "what the line is opened to" statistic? Or should I disregard the app test as nothing more than an unreliable speed checker?

@DSkyUser it could be either or neither.  Firstly the figure in the hub's stats is not generated by the modem stage of the hub as it is on FTTC lines as far as we have been told its a pasted value based on the product bought.

The speed test in the app is generated by a test Sky run but it seems to under estimate speeds. This came up last summer on my own 500Mb/s supply which routinely delivers the full 500Mb/s when tested on third party tests but the values in the My Sky app were consistently lower on occasions dropping below the guaranteed minimum for my line which could have triggered the speed guarantee.

Recently they have been closer but given the test routinely are run around 1.50am I doubt the discrepancy is down to contention. Sky are aware of the issue but the speed in Sky's test is always lower than my own tests run over wifi (I do have decent wifi!😀)

Really its up to you the most reliable speed test is run over a gigabit Ethernet link but unless you suspect there is an issue I woukdn't stress too much. Your line is shared with up to 31 other customers who share a 2.48Gb/s fibre to the exchange which is how Openreach's GPON system works.

Re: Router statistics vs Sky App Speed test

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that's come across this!

running tests on devices connected via Ethernet pretty consistently gives me 750-950mbps speeds which I'm confident they are truly receiving, I guess at that point I'll take the speed to hub tests on the app with a pinch of salt just wanted to make sure I was really getting what I was paying for more than anything.

All feels a little 1st world problem-y with these complaints of FTTP network speeds, I still remember the dial tones from Dial up broadband!
