Replacing a **really** old router

So this is for my mothers account who does not do forums and things. She has a router that I do not remember when it was first installed but I am not sure it has ever been changed in the 15+ years she has had Sky. She is still on a SkyHD box and I am not sure that has ever been replaced either! I know - I suggested she needs a package review, but she is trying to avoid both Q and Glass.

Her broadband connection is really slow though and I have done everything to improve the WiFi signal across the house short of running in a new router. The current one is a DLink  (MAC 5C:D9:98:**:**:**)

Now... what should (or can) I replace it with? I am thinking more compatibility rather than specific features - or do Sky simply swap out equipment this old?

@VillageYokel Old is not the word for that, see the link below and get the replacement, it's the sky Broadband Hub that they send out for FREE.

@VillageYokel Sky will replace an okd router like your mother's and it is sensible to ask them to do that as very old routers are a security risk. Unless your mother has previously told Sky that she authorises you can speak on her behalf she will have to make the call perhaps with you sitting there to take over the call.

She can continue to pay for Sky+HD but if her box fails Sky cannot replace it.

@VillageYokel

They will probably want to charge a monthly supplement for the Max Hub, but you can try insisting on getting the previous Sky Broadband Hub.

Discounting Glass/Stream the only 'replacement' for Sky+ HD is Sky Q, which itself has a few years left and is no longer an option to order through the Sky website.  Sky+ HD boxes haven't been manufactured for a decade and Sky no longer permits the transfer of viewing cards between them.

Then it's conceivable that's still an ADSL connection.  You should be able to check this through the router connection page information.

Re: Replacing a **really** old router

Thanks everyone for your replies.

JimM1 & Chrisee - Thanks I will check out the hub options. I know she would have to make the call, although if the web link is easier she can log in.

TimmyBGood - Yes, it almost certainly is ADSL connected. I suspect replacements are not going to be? I already knew of the discontinuation of Sky Q - I had that chat when I had another relatives SkyQ box swapped out due to failure.

So on the basis of it probably being ADSL; I imagine that the options are even more limited?

@VillageYokel actually only a tiny monority of lines are ADSL but the modems in the newer Sky hubs should still connect.

Re: Replacing a **really** old router

@VillageYokel The SR203 sky Broadband Hub replecement is ADSL compliant so should work no issue on the connection but it is wifi5 dual band operation which your old D-Link is not, got one off those sitting on the shelf ....

Re: Replacing a **really** old router

Chrisee - I know it still connects via the same socket and adapter it did all those years ago.... if that is a guide.
JimM1 - That is good to know. I know she (and when we visit) struggle to maintain a decent connection these days. Once a small number off devices are connected .... damn!

@VillageYokel

They'd almost certainly want to move the connection to FTTC as a minimum (FTTP where possible) if you requested a current Hub model.  Openreach really doesn't want to be supporting the digital equivalent of ADSL after PSTN ceases if it can possibly avoid this.

Re: Replacing a **really** old router

@VillageYokel Use the BTW and check out what is available, the connection properties etc, House number and the Postcode is all that should be required, FTTC unavailable will be withdrawn from service and replaced by the SOGEA, just a new name, but if it is all sold out or NOT available you are not getting it, have included a copy of my picture also although NOW FF connected.

 looking at this screenshot then, we should be good for SOGEA then.

Re: Replacing a **really** old router

@VillageYokel No, apply for anything new and you will be getting a FF Full Fibre connection no matter what! See the WBC FTTP......

Unless RED flagged because off Medical equipment reason's for not being moved over to Full Fibre connection or the DATA is just all wrong

Use the sky checker now.

Re: Replacing a **really** old router

I passed all this information on and been given a resounding "I do not want to change". There is a lot going on, so I can understand it all, and she is talking all "Well I want TNT but I don't want Sky Glass" as well. So I do not want to pressure her at the moment with new contracts and the like.

So would the other option be to buy a SR203 off of Amazon and just plug it in?
