Replacing Sky SR203 with new Modem/Router

Hi,

I am after some advice / guidance.

I'm planning to replace the current SR203 with my own router.

I have the following options:

HG612 --> RT-A82U

BT Business Hub 5 --> RT-A82U

DSL-AC88U

TP Link W9970 - RT-A82U

I believe i am currently on Sky Fibre 'superfast' (71mbps)  FTTC.

I am looking for the simplest option available, and i am thinking TP-Link Bridge Mode into the A82U

Any advice would be great

Many thanks

  • Why the change, is there an issue with the SR203?
  • BT Business hub 5?

Re: Replacing Sky SR203 with new Modem/Router

Wanted to get QoS, and i'm finding the SR203 range to be very poor.

A BT Hub cannot function with Sky Broadband.

Edit: ah, a Business Hub 5 as a modem, yes, but be aware that this model is very long in the tooth.

  • I understand that Qos is desirable but the SR203 range is addressable via ethernet, Powerline adapters or FOC Boosters?

Yes, I'm thinking the TP-Link as a modem will be the easiest option.

Set-up, Select Sky Fibre (Not MER) then bridge --> ASUS AX router

There is no need for this questioning . OP has clearly stated they want to use a 3rd party router for additional features, this is very common. If you have helpful info to post on 3rd party router setups then please go ahead otherwise its just noisy, off-topic posting.

The TP-Link modem > Asus router is certainly your best setup providing you dont plan on moving to G.Fast at any point. Obviously if you ever get FTTP then you'll just remove the TP-Link modem from the equation and connect the Asus router directly to the ONT.

Thanks James.

I don't think we will get G.Fast / FTTP anytime soon.

So as the Tp-link will be a modem i can use the AX 82 router?

I'm assuming once the tp-link is in modem / bridge mode, its fairly straight forward setting it up.

Re: Replacing Sky SR203 with new Modem/Router

@AshleyC1994  Just be aware!
If you have / need sky's voip phone service? this can only be achieved with sky's SR203/4 routers in situ,

Tom...

Sky want us to believe in better
BELIEVE =accept that (something) is true, especially without proof.
BETTER = of a higher standard, or more suitable, pleasing, or effective than other things or people:

Sky Q & 2 mini’s
SR203 router. > Replaced with ASUS XT9’s with a TP-Link TD-W9970 modem
Sky superfast 80/20 :sort of, 63-75/15. Devolo 1200 wifi > Replaced with cat 6
Sony KDAF8 65 oled.

Thank you - but I don't even have a phone plugged into. Haven't used a landlane in over 10 years

@AshleyC1994

Correct, the TP-Link device will act as a modem so you can use the Asus router in full router mode.

Providing you setup the bridge properly on the TP-Link side it should be as simple as setting the Asus router to Automatic IP on the WAN side then entering the Sky connection string which is abc123@skydsl|abc123

  • I believe you will see if you reread the posts that @AshleyC1994 only clearly stated the reasons for his need for a third party router after my relevant questions and I then suggested the simplest method to resolve the range part of the request.
  • If I am wrong please deliver your thoughts in a more acceptable manner in future.
