Red PON light

I have had my Sky full fibre broadband installed today and there is a red light by PON on the openreach box. I can't connect to the internet. Can someone help me please?

@Hannah-01 There is no help with that fault RED on PON is bad, have you been told that you are activated by a text message from sky?

It is also up to midnight on the activation day message.

If not up and running by tomorrow, then call sky.

Red PON means there is no logical connection.  That is, there is a physical connection and the fibre is lit but there is no sync.  As JimM1 said, it is most likely that it is not activated yet.

(And while on the subject, a red LOS light means there is no physical connection, i.e. the fibre is unlit due to a fault between you and the service provider).

Passive Optical Network 

In practice, PONs are typically used for the last mile between Internet service providers (ISP) and their customers. In this use, a PON has a point-to-multipoint topology in which an ISP uses a single device to serve many end-user sites using a system such as 10G-PON or GPON. In this one-to-many topology, a single fiber serving many sites branches into multiple fibers through a passive splitter, and those fibers can each serve multiple sites through further splitters. The light from the ISP is divided through the splitters to reach all the customer sites, and light from the customer sites is combined into the single fiber.

The “Openreach box” is an ONT or Optical Network Terminal.

POWER is obvious, of course.

PON is Passive Optical Network.  Passive because the signal is not boosted and so limited to about 20km range.  (The alternative is an AON.  An active network where the signal is boosted along the way, giving potentially unlimited range).

LOS is Loss Of Signal.  Basically, the light’s gone out due to a cable break etc.

LAN is Local Area Network.  It’s the connection to your router.  When it’s flashing it’s passing data.

(And for those of you that get Cityfibre when they launch…their PON light is the ‘Broadband’ light and their LOS light is the ‘Service’ light.  The LAN light is ‘Ethernet’.  They behave a little differently to the Openreach ONT but essentially mean the same as the above).
