RAX70 Sky Q

I'm thinking of replacing our Sky WiFi Hub with an Netgear RAX70 router to increase the strength of the WiFi as we live in a town house. We have an ONT so I believe I can just straight replace it.

The RAX70 supports Option 61 from what I have read. Will the SKY Q box connect to the new router ok?

@Darren283 you can replace the Sky hub with a Netgear router but you will lose the voice line.. However in a three storey property it is not guaranteed that a single router can provide usable wifi on every level. A solution with multiple WiFi sources is often better like Netgear's Orbi range or similar msybeca better choice.

Yes I had one connected to our Sky broadband and it worked OK but better wired. But as @Chrisee   has stated, if you have Sky Talk it will not connect.

I'm now using Netgear's Orbi Mesh setup as we have a large house with all solid brick interior walls.

Re: RAX70 Sky Q

I tried connect Sky Q  via Wi-Fi using my TP Liink few years ago...will only connect via 2.4Ghz. Unless there has been a software update in the last few years. Just make a note incase you disable the 2.4Ghz band on Netgear.

Sky Q connects to 5Ghz on Sky router.  My router is next to Sky Q box so its now wired.

Re: RAX70 Sky Q

Thank you for all the assistance. If I got one of those Orbi systems would I need a new router as well?

I was thinking about upgrading to Sky Max Broadband instead but I know you can't split the 2.4ghz and 5ghz frequencies as I want to continue to use my Playstation Portal properly.

Re: RAX70 Sky Q

I am not really keen on paying any ISP extra monthly cash for boosters when only rented to you and must be returned when you leave them. And the guranteed Wi-Fi is only about 25Mbs.. I would rather spend that money upfront for my own hardware. I am currently using a pair of TP-Link Deco X50 for Wi-Fi. Obviously the more money you spend on the hardware.. better the quality.

But if its games just on 1 game console then look into a powerline. My sons play online games on their PC and would only trust a powerline over Wi-Fi connection. I have one connected to back of the Sky black router 2nd unit on the wall near their PC.

It won't get full internet speed, maybe about 100Mbs but lot more stable than Wi-Fi for gaming.

Re: RAX70 Sky Q

I have 1 Deco X50 plugged into the Sky black router with Wi-Fi disabled on Sky router.

Deco is set as "Access point"  not "Router" The 2nd Deco is placed upstairs bedroom...but you will need to play around and find the sweet spot or distance and obstacles between both.

Re: RAX70 Sky Q

Perfect thank you, would you still be able to connect the Sky Q to the 1st Deco access point and have no issues?

@Darren283 as it happens I use a 3 unit Deco set up in access point mode myself  behind my Sky hub in a 3 level home. The first unit is connected by ethernet to the Sky hub the two Deco satellites connect by WiFi to the first unit. It is all controlled by the Deco app and beyond choosing the Access Mode as the Operation mode from the Advanced menu it is very easy to set up. I copied the Sky hub's SSID and password to save logging in my devices - only do this after turning off the Sky hub's wifi.

Netgear Orbi is very similar by the way.

Re: RAX70 Sky Q

That's really helpful thank you, so I can use my standard black Sky Router get a Deco trio and mimic your setup and I get WiFi 6 from the deco units?

If I have a Deco unit in my living room I could run an ethernet from that to the Sky Q Box? Or potentially just connect to the Deco WiFi itself?

Apologies for all the questions, I just want to make sure I get the right things.

@Darren283 Sky Q boxes can complicate things. If you only have a main Sky Q box then that can be connected by Wifi to the Deco box or as you suggest by ethernet although if the Sky hub is close by runntheccable to that instead. Any Sky Q minis cannot connect to the Deco WiFi they either need a cable or to connect to a Sky wifi source either from the hub or from the main Q box. Qi has weird wifi habits.
