PlayStation remote won’t connect

My son got a PlayStation backbone for Christmas but it won't connect when he is away from the house. I've done everything in terms of the iPhone and the PlayStation, I can only think that it is a problem with the router/wifi? Any advice would be very welcome!

@EmilyPantry there doesn't appear to be any need to open firewall ports on the Sky hub to get remote play to work which is the feature the backbone controller uses.
